In a heartbreaking incident, 18-year-old NEET aspirant Abhijeet Giri was found hanging in his hostel room in Kota, Rajasthan, on Thursday night. The student, originally from Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, had been preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) at a local coaching institute since April 2024.

The incident came to light when a mess worker arrived at his room around 8 pm to deliver food and received no response. Concerned, the worker, along with other hostellers, forced open the door and found him hanging from the ceiling fan.

Investigation Underway

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Lal Singh Tanwar confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the room. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident, but the reasons behind the suicide are still unclear.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Abhijeet was a dedicated student who attended his coaching classes regularly and was performing well in his studies.

Lack of Suicide Prevention Devices

One concerning factor highlighted in the investigation is the absence of a suicide prevention device on the ceiling fan in Abhijeet's room. The district administration has mandated these devices in student accommodations to prevent suicides, but this particular hostel room was not equipped with one.

Rising Suicide Cases Among Coaching Students

This tragic incident marks the third suicide by a coaching student in Kota this year. The city, renowned as a hub for coaching institutes, has witnessed a disturbing rise in student suicides, with 17 cases reported in 2024 alone.

Post-Mortem and Family Notification

Following the discovery, the body was sent for post-mortem examination, which will be conducted once Abhijeet's family arrives in Kota. Police have already informed the family about the tragic incident.
