In a disturbing event, the principal of a school in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, allegedly compelled 80 Class 10 female students to take off their shirts during a 'Pen Day' celebration. The incident occurred on January 10, 2025, at a school within the Jorapokhar police station limits. Reports indicate the girls were sent home wearing only their blazers, triggering anger and concern among parents and the local community.
'Pen Day' is traditionally observed by students as a farewell gesture before their board examinations, where they write good wishes on each other’s shirts. However, the principal reportedly disapproved of this activity and, despite the students’ apologies, insisted they remove their shirts. Parents have described this action as deeply humiliating, leaving the students emotionally shaken.
Upset over the incident, parents filed complaints with Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Madhvi Mishra, voicing concerns about their daughters' mental health. One concerned parent stated, "Our daughters are already under pressure due to board exams. This has added unnecessary stress. What if one of them had taken a drastic step?"
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, DC Madhvi Mishra confirmed the formation of an inquiry committee to thoroughly investigate the incident. The panel includes the sub-divisional magistrate, the district education officer, the district social welfare officer, and a sub-divisional police officer. Mishra has assured that strict measures will be taken based on the committee’s report.
Jharia MLA Ragini Singh condemned the principal's actions, describing the event as "disgraceful and unacceptable." She joined the parents in demanding the principal's resignation and immediate arrest, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and stronger protections for students.
As the investigation progresses, the community is demanding swift and appropriate action against those involved. This incident has intensified calls for stricter policies to safeguard student dignity and ensure a secure and supportive school environment.
