Rising Viral Diseases in Delhi-NCR: Survey Indicates 54% of Households Impacted

Recent survey by LocalCircles indicates that a considerable rise in viral diseases in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) has been observed, with at least one family member in 54% of households suffering from fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, stomach issues, joint pain, body pain, or breathing difficulty.

Survey Overview

The survey gathered information from 13,938 Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad residents. Respondents were questioned about how many individuals in their homes have currently been presenting symptoms of COVID-19, flu, or viral fever. The findings are below:

  • 9% reported that four or more individuals in their household were symptomatic.

  • 45% reported that 2-3 individuals were symptomatic.

  • 36% reported that no one in their household was symptomatic.

  • 10% could not provide a clear response.

Comparison with historical data

There is a stark rise in the incidence of these diseases when compared to August 2024 data. Previously, 38% of households had such symptoms in family members, whereas now, according to the survey, 54% have been affected.

Between January and May 2024, India recorded 15,266 cases of Influenza A (H1N1), with 1,128 fatalities. Out of 12,875 patients examined for respiratory tract infections, 4,548 tested positive for viral infections. Notably, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) was detected in 20% of cases.

Demographic split and Health advisory

The poll garnered over 13,000 replies from citizens of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. 63% of respondents were men and 37% were women

Given the rise in viral illnesses, health experts recommend the following:

  • Practice hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water.

  • Use a mask: Wear a mask when in crowded or enclosed areas.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink lots of fluids to keep yourself hydrated.

  • Seek medical attention: See a healthcare provider if symptoms do not go away or get worse.

  • Residents are encouraged to be on guard and observe these precautions to minimize the spread of infection.
