Study Claims This State to Be India’s Happiest State

Dr. Amey Patil

The World Happiness Report released in March had India ranked at an extremely poor 126th position out of 137 countries in the World Happiness Index.

India was also ranked behind our neighboring countries of Pakistan (108), Sri Lanka (112), and Bangladesh (118). However, there's a small silver lining, as this state has managed to be India's happiest state.

A study conducted by Professor Rajesh K Pillania declared Mizoram as the happiest state in India. He works as a professor of Strategy at the Management Development Institute of Gurugram.

The study evaluated states on six parameters -

  • Work-related issues

  • Family relationships

  • Social Issues and Philanthropy

  • Religion

  • COVID-19's effect on happiness

  • Physical and mental health

Mizoram became the second state in India to achieve 100% literacy. Therefore, the state will be able to offer students better growth opportunities even in difficult socio-economic conditions. The report also said that every child in the Mizo community of Mizoram starts earning at a young age, irrespective of gender. The state believes that no job is big or small, and children find employment by the age of 16 or 17. There is absolutely no discrimination between girls and boys.

Mizoram has a large number of broken families. However, many mothers are financially independent as they have been working since a very young age. Therefore, they can raise their children well.

The report also mentioned some students who come from lower socio-economic backgrounds with their fathers either abandoning their families or working as daily wage laborers. However, the social structure of Mizoram still inspires these children to have bigger academic dreams.

Mizoram is also a casteless society. Therefore, it helps to keep harmony among the people.
