Varanasi: Patient Has His Surgery Deferred Due to Misbehavior with the Doctor
Misbehavior with a doctor or any healthcare staff has been a common norm in India. These incidences also culminate into unfortunate events of violence against doctors.
However, a hospital decided to take strict action against a patient for misbehavior. A patient's surgery was recently deferred due to misbehavior with a junior resident.
The incident took place in Sir Sunderlal Hospital in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University, in Varanasi.
The 42-year-old male patient was diagnosed with Varicose veins in his lower limb. Misbehavior with a junior resident has got his surgery deferred. The type of misbehavior isn't clear yet.
One may question the ethical ramifications of this incident. However, the new Medical Ethics Regulations drafted by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2022 allow doctors to do so.
The draft states that doctors can now refuse to treat "abusive, unruly, and violent patients or relatives."
