This 96-year-old man and the Saga of his Speeding Ticket - See What Happened Next
Exceeding the speed limit in a school zone can be a one-way ticket to the courtroom in the USA. The speed limit is 15 mph - 25 mph (25 kmph - 40 kmph), and anything over that can lead to a hefty fine of up to $100.
So why was this man exempted from any punishment for exceeding the speed limit? A video of this particular court hearing went viral on the internet back in 2018.
The video shows a 96-year-old man held responsible for exceeding the speed limit in a school zone. You might think it's his age which spared him. However, that's not all of it.
What happened later was a series of emotional events which made the entire social media shed a tear but with a smile on their face.
The 96-year-old man Mr. Coella was presented in front of the then 82-year-old Chief Judge Frank Caprio. Judge Caprio quickly reiterated that Mr. Coella was accused of exceeding the speed limit.
Mr. Coella was quick to reveal that he does not drive that fast. He said that he was taking his handicapped son to a doctor for blood work which was the reason for his driving fast. He further added that he has to do this every two weeks as his son suffers from Cancer.
Both Judge Caprio and Mr. Coella were in tears by then. Mr. Coella revealed that his son is 63 years old. Judge Caprio called him a good man and appreciated him for taking care of his son even while being 96-years-old.
Judge Caprio pointed out to his own son who was in attendance at the courtroom. He jokingly said that his son will also expect to drive him around when Judge Caprio would be in his 90s. Judge Caprio concluded by wishing the best for Mr. Coella and his son. He happily dismissed the case with immediate effect.
Needless to say that Mr. Coella and Judge Caprio are still good friends as Mr. Coella approaches 100 years of age.
