The cases of viral and allergic eye infections are increasing in Delhi-NCR, with hospitals reporting a surge in patients visiting outpatient departments with pink and watery eyes. Private hospitals are noticing an uptick, most likely due to the changing weather and also due to the new strain of the virus which could be highly contagious. The top symptoms include redness, itching, swelling, watery discharge and a gritty sensation in the eyes.

MedBound Times contacted Dr. Shruti Shah, glaucoma expert and Consultant Ophthalmologist, says "We have been experiencing a significant surge in conjunctivitis cases for the past two months. We routinely see this surge in monsoon season, but this time even in winters we had many cases most likely due to a new strain of adenovirus, which is highly contagious and spreads rapidly through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces.

“What was unique this time was that many patients had membrane formations in their lower eyelid fornix. This kind of membranous conjunctivitis needs more aggressive treatment and close follow-ups. It also takes longer to resolve."

Infection Self-Resolving, Takes 3-7 Days

Doctors state that viral conjunctivitis usually resolves on its own within three to seven days. Ophthalmologists generally advise supportive treatments that include cold compresses, artificial tears, and anti-inflammatory eye drops to alleviate discomfort. They suggested that lubricating eyedrops can be used to soothe the eyes under medical guidance.

Dr. Shreyas believes that viral conjunctivitis cases typically respond well to medication, with recovery occurring within 3 to 5 days. “Treatment for such illness varies depending on the cause and in some cases, requires only anti-allergic medication, while others may need a combination with antibiotics."

Maintaining proper hygiene and taking preventive measures can help reduce the spread and severity of these infections, ensuring faster recovery. A patient and family need to understand that the infection could be contagious. Hence, touching shared items like TV remotes, towels and pillow covers could increase the spread of infection in the family itself.

"Delhi's poor sanitation issues due to waterlogging has been a matter on concern and projects to clean up the Yamuna river are undertaken under the guidance of Modi government" says Dr. Shreyas.

Doctors advise frequent handwashing ,avoiding contact lenses and staying away from crowded places, especially if experiencing symptoms. Not sharing personal items even eye drops and seeking medical help instead of self medication is strongly recommended in these cases.
