How Eric Dane is confronting ALS in life and on screen and what his story means for awareness and care

Dr. Theresa Lily Thomas

Eric Dane, known for his work across film and television — including his breakout role as “McSteamy” (Dr. Mark Sloan) on Grey’s Anatomy — recently revealed that he has been diagnosed with ALS. In an exclusive with PEOPLE, he disclosed his diagnosis in April 2025. “I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he said, adding that he is grateful to have his family by his side as they navigate this next chapter.

In interviews, he admitted it has been a deeply challenging time and said he has “no reason to be in good spirit” but also emphasized the importance of sharing his journey publicly.

In addition to coping privately, Dane has recently chosen to bring his experience to the screen. He will portray a firefighter suffering from ALS in the upcoming series Brilliant Minds, a role that resonates strongly with his own reality. The acting challenge has drawn praise for its authenticity and courage.

This appearance in the second season of Brilliant Minds also marks his first on screen role since publicly announcing his ALS diagnosis.

Balancing Reality and Reflection: Dane’s Role in Brilliant Minds

By taking on the character of a first responder battling ALS, Dane navigates a rare convergence of fiction and real life. According to People, the role has been described as a tribute to those living with ALS and a way to raise public awareness about the disease.

According to reports, his performance earned a 10-minute standing ovation on set, reflecting the gravity and authenticity of the portrayal.

He has described the experience to E! Online as both emotionally taxing and cathartic, acknowledging that separating himself from the character was difficult because the storyline parallels his own journey.

Dane has also spoken about his future in acting. He explained that while his physical abilities are limited, he still has his speech and cognitive clarity. He remains open to continuing his career, though he expects future opportunities to be centered around ALS related roles that align with his current lived reality.

What Is ALS?

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, the disease leads to loss of muscle control, difficulties in speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing. There is currently no cure for ALS, but certain treatments like gene therapy and supportive care can help manage symptoms, extend quality of life, and provide comfort.

Management often includes multidisciplinary care, physical therapy, speech therapy, nutritional support, respiratory care, and assistive devices. Palliative care and counselling may also be important, depending on disease progression.

Eric Dane’s candid disclosure of his ALS diagnosis and his decision to portray an ALS-affected firefighter in Brilliant Minds represent a rare blending of personal reality and artistic expression. As he continues to navigate life with ALS, he wants his story to shed light on the human cost of neurodegenerative disease and the need for more research.
