A Houston Medicine On Health blog offers five early signs of the disease that no one should ignore.^[1]

According to the blog, bladder cancer is most commonly a type called urothelial cell carcinoma, which originates in the lining of the bladder and related urinary structures and accounts for over 90% of bladder cancer cases.

Early recognition of these symptoms can significantly improve treatment outcomes and quality of life.

Dr. Raj Satkunasivam, urologic oncologist at Houston Methodist, outlined the following symptoms that warrant prompt medical evaluation:

1. Blood in the urine – This may be visible or microscopic. Even if painless or intermittent, the presence of blood should trigger consultation with a physician, particularly a urologist.

2. Frequent urination – Needing to urinate more often without an increase in fluid intake can be an early indication of bladder or other urinary issues.

3. Painful or burning urination – Discomfort, stinging or pain during urination may arise from several conditions, but should not be ignored when persistent.

4. Changes to bathroom habits – Symptoms such as weak flow, intermittent flow or feelings of incomplete emptying can signal bladder abnormalities.

5. Late night bathroom visits – Waking up multiple times at night to urinate with no change in hydration habits—may represent more than normal aging, especially if other symptoms are present.

“These symptoms may overlap with common issues like urinary tract infections, prostate enlargement or age‑related changes—but when they are unusual, persistent or worsening, it’s essential to seek professional evaluation,” Satkunasivam said.
