What Happened?
Cai Yuxin, a popular beauty influencer from Taiwan received the injection at a Bogotá clinic, reportedly for aesthetic enhancement.
The substance, referred to as “leche (milk) injection,” was later identified as an unauthorized and hazardous chemical propofol-based sedative — administered by a prominent cosmetic surgeon at Fairy Clinic.
Shortly after the procedure, she developed complications, including cardiac and respiratory distress, ultimately resulting in her death.
The Procedure
Cai reportedly visited Fairy Clinic in Taipei to receive the injection for chronic insomnia.
The drug was administered without proper supervision or monitoring.
After the injection, Dr. Wu left the clinic, leaving her in the care of an unlicensed assistant.
The Doctor Involved
Dr. Wu Shaohu – a high-profile cosmetic surgeon, often called the “Godfather of Liposuction” in Taiwan.
He is now under investigation for gross medical negligence and violation of the Medical Care Act.
Authorities have also questioned the lack of proper informed consent, monitoring, and emergency protocols at the facility.
What Went Wrong
Propofol dosage was allegedly miscalculated or delivered too rapidly.
Cai went into cardiac arrest, fell into a coma, and died after 18 days on life support.
CPR was attempted via video call under Dr. Wu’s guidance — with no licensed medical team present.
Public and Medical Community Reaction
The case has triggered outrage in Colombia and internationally, especially among medical professionals and patient safety advocates.
The Colombian Medical Federation and other health watchdogs have called for stricter regulation of aesthetic procedures.
Social media has been flooded with calls for accountability and education, warning against undergoing treatments without verified safety standards.
Why This Matters
Propofol is a controlled substance requiring intensive monitoring.
Similar misuse led to Michael Jackson’s death in 2009.
This case exposes severe lapses in cosmetic clinic regulation and the need for medical oversight in aesthetic procedures.
Takeaway Message
This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of unregulated cosmetic procedures and the importance of:
1. Ensuring treatments are scientifically backed
2. Verifying credentials of practitioners
3. Prioritizing patient safety over aesthetic trend
