The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I recall, its most serious classification, for certain peeled garlic products sold in the United States due to a potential risk of botulism, a rare but life threatening foodborne illness.
The recall affects peeled garlic products sold under Christopher Ranch and Garland Fresh brands and distributed through Tops Friendly Markets stores in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.
According to recall notices, the products were sold in 6 ounce plastic containers and include all best by dates. The affected Universal Product Codes (UPCs) include 00068826753408, 00071894000005, and 00007457410852.
Tops Friendly Markets issued a recall notice stating that the affected garlic products were available in its stores and advised customers to stop using the product immediately. Retail systems have removed the items from shelves and blocked further sales.
No illnesses had been reported at the time of the recall announcement.
Consumers who purchased the recalled garlic have been instructed to check their refrigerators for the product and return it to the place of purchase with proof of purchase for a full refund.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the garlic had been stored in open air coolers that could not maintain appropriate refrigeration temperatures.
Garland Fresh peeled garlic requires storage at approximately 32 to 35°F, while Christopher Ranch peeled garlic requires storage at approximately 32 to 37°F to limit microbial growth.
When temperature control fails, conditions may allow the growth of Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium that produces botulinum toxin.
The FDA classifies this situation as a Class I recall, which indicates a reasonable probability that exposure to the product may cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum. In this case, the concern is foodborne botulism, which occurs when food containing preformed toxin is consumed.
The toxin affects the nervous system and can lead to paralysis. Symptoms typically begin within 6 hours to 2 weeks after ingestion.
Common symptoms include:
Nausea and vomiting
Abdominal pain or diarrhea
Muscle weakness
Blurred or double vision
Slurred speech
Difficulty moving the eyes
Difficulty speaking or swallowing
Breathing difficulty
Dizziness or constipation
If untreated, botulism can progress to respiratory failure and death. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a case fatality rate of approximately 5 to 10 percent.
Consumers are advised not to consume the recalled garlic products. They should discard the product or return it to the store for a refund.
Health authorities advise individuals to seek immediate medical care if they develop symptoms consistent with botulism after consuming the product, as early treatment improves outcomes.
