The Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine said Dr. Abderahmane Fediore is qualified in sports medicine and sports biology.
The dispute follows Senegal's Round of 32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and has intensified scrutiny of the federation's medical support.

Senegal Football Federation President Abdoulaye Fall has questioned the qualifications of the national team's long-serving World Cup doctor, saying the physician's background did not match the demands of elite football despite serving with the squad for several years. Speaking during a post-tournament review of Senegal's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, Fall's remarks were swiftly challenged by the Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine, which defended Dr. Abderahmane Fediore's specialist training and professional record.

The controversy follows Senegal's Round of 32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the dismissal of head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw. Fall said the federation brought in additional medical expertise after players expressed concerns about the medical support available during the tournament, adding that "health comes before everything."

Senegal FA Chief Questions World Cup Team Doctor's Qualifications

Speaking at a press conference reviewing Senegal's World Cup campaign, Football Federation President Abdoulaye Fall said he only recently learned that Dr. Abderahmane Fediore was originally trained in gynecology and obstetrics. According to Reuters, Fall said the physician did not have "the academic profile required" to oversee elite footballers.

Fall also said feedback from players suggested they lacked confidence in the team's medical support, prompting the federation to seek additional specialist expertise during the tournament.

Senegal entered the World Cup as reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions after defeating Morocco in January, but lost to France and Norway in the group stage before surrendering a 2-0 lead against Belgium in the Round of 32 and losing 3-2 after extra time. The disappointing campaign led to the dismissal of head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw.

Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine Defends World Cup Team Doctor's Credentials

Later on Monday, the Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine issued a statement describing Abdoulaye Fall's remarks as "unfounded and defamatory." The association said Dr. Abderahmane Fediore holds a specialist diploma in sports medicine and sports biology from the Faculty of Medicine at Cheikh Anta Diop University, disputing suggestions that his qualifications were limited to gynecology.

The association said Fediore has served as Senegal's national team doctor since 2017, accompanying the squad at three FIFA World Cups and five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. It also highlighted his previous role as head of the physiotherapy department at Fann Hospital.

According to the association, Fediore has also worked with athletes in football, swimming, handball, and cycling, and has served as a medical officer for FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) during international competitions. The body called for a public apology from Fall and said it reserved the right to pursue further action to protect the doctor's professional reputation.

Why the Team Doctor's Sports Medicine Qualifications Became the Focus

The disagreement is not solely about Dr. Fediore's original specialty but whether his qualifications met the expectations of the federation and its players. While Abdoulaye Fall questioned his suitability for the role, the Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine maintained that his postgraduate training in sports medicine and years of international football experience made him fully qualified.

Team doctors in elite football are responsible for much more than treating injuries. They oversee emergency medical care during matches, supervise rehabilitation, monitor players' fitness, advise on return-to-play decisions, and help reduce injury risk throughout a tournament. Confidence between players and medical staff is also considered an important part of athlete care, particularly during major international competitions.

Senegal Football Federation Faces Fresh Scrutiny After 2026 FIFA World Cup Exit

The dispute has added to scrutiny of Senegal's handling of its World Cup campaign, which ended with a Round of 32 exit and the dismissal of head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw. While Fall maintains that concerns raised by players prompted the federation to seek additional medical expertise, the Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine continues to defend Dr. Fediore's qualifications and professional record. The conflicting accounts have left the federation facing renewed questions over its sporting and medical decisions.
