Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: Please introduce yourself to our readers.

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: I’m a dental surgeon with a BDS degree from Amrita School of Dentistry and 2.5 years of experience working in private dental clinics. My passion lies in transforming smiles and boosting confidence through my work. Alongside my dental career, I’m also a singer who finds joy and balance in music. My journey in dentistry has been as much about building relationships as it has been about honing clinical skills, and I believe both my professions allow me to connect with people in unique and meaningful ways.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What motivated you to choose BDS as your career path?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: Growing up, I was always drawn to the healthcare field, but dentistry stood out to me because it’s such a unique combination of science, precision, and creativity. I loved the idea of helping people not just with their health but also their confidence. A smile can be transformative, and being able to play a role in that transformation was incredibly motivating.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: Can you share a moment from your BDS journey that significantly impacted your perspective on dentistry?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: There’s one patient I’ll never forget during my clinical postings. She was terrified of the dentist and had avoided treatment for years. By taking the time to listen, reassure her, and explain the procedure step by step, I was able to help her overcome that fear. Her gratitude afterward changed the way I looked at dentistry—it’s not just about treatments, but about the human connection and trust you build with your patients.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How did clinical training during your education prepare you for private practice?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: Clinical training was a turning point. It gave me hands-on experience with real patients, which is invaluable. I learned how to communicate with patients effectively, explain their treatment plans, and address their concerns. It also taught me the importance of empathy and building rapport, which are critical in private practice.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What unique skills or insights did you gain from working in a private dental clinic?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: One of the most important skills I developed was learning how to manage anxious patients. Many people come to the dentist with preconceived fears, and it’s our job to help them feel comfortable. I also gained insights into the operational side of running a practice, such as time management and patient scheduling, which are just as important as clinical skills.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What has been the most rewarding aspect of your 2.5 years of professional experience?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: Without a doubt, it’s the relationships I’ve built. Connecting with patients and seeing the positive impact of my work on their lives is deeply fulfilling. I’ve also had the privilege of interacting with experienced professionals in the field, which has broadened my understanding of dentistry and inspired me to keep improving.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How do you ensure continuous learning and stay updated with advancements in dentistry?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: Dentistry is an ever-evolving field, and staying updated is non-negotiable. I make it a point to attend workshops, seminars, and webinars. These not only help me learn about new techniques and advancements but also provide opportunities to network with peers and experts.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What strategies do you use to make anxious patients feel comfortable during treatment?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: The key is communication. I explain procedures in simple, clear terms, ensuring they understand what to expect. I also make an effort to be patient and reassuring, often engaging them in light conversations to distract them. Sometimes, even small gestures like taking breaks during a long procedure can make a huge difference.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: Have you come across any myths about dental care that patients often believe? How do you address them?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: A common one is that scaling damages the enamel. Patients are often hesitant because they think it weakens their teeth. I take the time to explain how scaling actually removes harmful plaque and tartar, which, if left untreated, can cause gum disease and tooth loss. Education is a big part of what we do as dentists.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What’s a piece of advice you often give to your patients regarding oral health?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: I always emphasize the importance of regular dental check-ups and consistent oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing are essential, but professional cleanings can catch issues early and save a lot of trouble later.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What inspired you to pursue singing alongside your dental career?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: Singing has always been my escape, my way to unwind and express myself. It’s something I’ve loved since childhood, and I find that it brings a sense of balance to my life. Dentistry and singing may seem worlds apart, but for me, they complement each other beautifully.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: When did your journey in singing begin, and what have been some of your most memorable achievements as a singer?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: I started singing at the age of 3, and music has been a constant companion ever since. During my college years, I actively participated in arts festivals and was fortunate to secure the first prize in solo singing for three consecutive years. Those moments were incredibly rewarding and gave me the confidence to pursue my passion further. Over the years, I’ve also had the privilege of performing in many concerts, each experience enriching my love for music and allowing me to connect with audiences on a deeper level.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: Which singers have inspired you in your musical journey?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: I’ve always been deeply inspired by legends like KS Chithra, Sujatha, and Shreya Ghoshal. Their versatility, emotive singing, and dedication to their craft are truly remarkable. Listening to their music has not only fueled my passion for singing but also taught me the importance of connecting with emotions through art.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How do you manage time between your dental profession and your passion for singing?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: It’s all about prioritizing and planning. I dedicate my work hours fully to dentistry and carve out specific times for singing. Some days are busier than others, but having a clear schedule helps me balance both without feeling overwhelmed.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What do you envision for yourself in the next five years, both as a dentist and as a singer?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: Professionally, I want to continue growing as a dentist, possibly specializing in an area that aligns with my interests. On the singing front, I hope to explore more opportunities to share my music and connect with people through it. My goal is to keep evolving in both fields.

Q

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring dentists, what would it be?

A

Dr. Anagha Jayaram: Dentistry is more than a profession; it’s about building trust and relationships. Always stay curious and open to learning and remember that your passion will reflect in the care you provide.
