Ludhiana, December 23: The medical community in Ludhiana has placed its trust in Dr. Avtar S. Kharay, electing him unopposed as President-Elect of IMA Ludhiana for 2027. The decision was announced at a recent leadership meeting, reflecting strong consensus and confidence in his experience, values, and vision for the association.

The election also confirmed a full leadership line-up for the coming year, setting the stage for continuity and collaboration within one of Punjab’s most active medical bodies.

Leadership Team Finalised Without Contest

The Election Commission declared the following office bearers, all elected unanimously:

  • Dr. Pawan Dhingra as President for 2026

  • Dr. Davinderjit Walia as Senior Vice-President for 2026

  • Dr. Narjit Kaur as Vice-President for 2026

  • Dr. Avtar S. Kharay as President-Elect for 2027

The smooth and uncontested process underscored the unity among members and a shared commitment to strengthening professional ethics and patient care across the city.

A Clinician with Deep Roots in Ludhiana

Dr. Kharay is a well-known orthopedic surgeon and the proprietor of Kharay Hospital. Colleagues describe him as approachable, grounded, and deeply invested in the welfare of both patients and fellow doctors. His years in practice have given him a clear view of the pressures doctors face today, from rising patient expectations to safety concerns within hospital settings.

Speaking after the announcement, Dr. Kharay called the election process cooperative and dignified. He said the result strengthened his resolve to work closely with colleagues and listen carefully to the concerns of the wider medical fraternity.

Focus on Doctor Safety and Trust

One of Dr. Kharay’s central concerns is the growing incidence of violence against doctors. He noted that episodes of road rage and aggression within healthcare spaces point to a wider breakdown in mutual respect. According to him, protecting doctors is not just about security measures but also about rebuilding trust through empathy and communication.

He reflected on how earlier generations viewed doctors with gratitude and patience. Today, he believes that relationship has become strained. His aim is to help restore balance by encouraging honest dialogue, transparency in care, and emotional support systems for doctors who often work under intense pressure.

Bringing Members Together

With more than 1,500 members, IMA Ludhiana represents a diverse and dynamic group of professionals. Dr. Kharay has stressed the importance of greater participation from members, saying that a strong association depends on active involvement rather than a few voices.

Outgoing President Dr. Dheeraj Aggarwal congratulated the new leadership and voiced confidence in their direction. He stated that violence against doctors and the issue of mixopathy remain pressing concerns. He also echoed the need for better doctor patient bonding, calling communication the foundation of safer and more humane care.
