

Dr. Manish Mandal, Medical Superintendent and Head of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna, has been elected Governor of the Asia Pacific Region for the International College of Surgeons (ICS).
This leadership position was determined through a democratic voting process at the 44th Biennial Congress of the International College of Surgeons held on December 5, 2025, in Singapore.
The election was conducted for 6 governors for different regions, one president, vice-President and secretary.
Five individuals contested for the Governor post and Dr. Mandal won with a majority of 51 votes from 71 voting members, as reported by Times of India. He is expected to serve as ICS Asia Pacific Governor for a two-year term.
The International College of Surgeons is a globally recognized medical professional organization dedicated to advancing surgical education, research, training, and international cooperation. Its governance includes regional governors responsible for coordinating activities, fostering collaboration, and representing member surgeons across different geographic areas.
As the Asia Pacific Governor, Dr. Mandal will:
Liaise with surgical leaders, educators, and institutions across Asia Pacific countries.
Encourage international academic collaborations, training exchanges, and multi-center research projects.
Promote surgical education and best practices within the regional section of the ICS.
Such roles in professional medical bodies help bridge clinical expertise and collaborative opportunities among surgeons and healthcare educators worldwide.
Dr. Manish Mandal is a senior Indian surgeon and academic leader specializing in surgical gastroenterology, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, gastrointestinal oncology, and minimally invasive procedures. He serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology & Liver Transplant at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, where he has been on faculty for over two decades.
Dr. Mandal earned his MBBS (with honours) from BLDEA’s Medical College, Karnataka, and completed his MS in General Surgery at Darbhanga Medical College, Bihar.
An active researcher and educator, Dr. Mandal has published over 30 papers in national and international journals and contributed to research in areas such as gallbladder cancer.
