Washington, DC (January, 2026) —The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) is pleased to welcome Samir M. Parikh, MD, FASN as its new president. Dr. Parikh, who begins his term today, succeeds Dr. Prabir Roy-Chaudhury who led ASN in 2025.
Dr. Parikh is Professor of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology and Chief of Nephrology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where he holds the Robert Tucker Hayes Distinguished Chair in Nephrology, in honor of Dr. Floyd C Rector, Jr., and the Ruth W. and Milton P. Levy, Sr., Chair in Molecular Nephrology.
Dr. Parikh currently leads research to uncover and understand the mechanisms underlying acute kidney injury and aging in the kidney. In recent studies, the Parikh laboratory has examined mitochondrial maintenance via PGC1alpha and NAD+ as a novel pathway for resilience against acute physiological stressors. Studies exploring the links between AKI, CKD, and aging and how NAD+ metabolism impacts injury in other organs are ongoing. Dr. Parikh’s research has been published in Science, Nature, Nature Medicine, JCI, Science Translational Medicine, PNAS and other high-impact journals.
Since 2024, Dr. Parikh has chaired the Transforming Kidney Health Research (TKHR) initiative for ASN, a collaborative effort between federal agencies, research institutions, and non-profit partners, as well as fellow scientists, clinicians, and patient representatives to reimagine the kidney research
ecosystem. Dr. Parikh played a pivotal role in developing the recently released TKHR report, A Research Agenda for the Future, which provides a unified blueprint for coordinated action and strategies to strengthen research funding, coordination, and workforce development across government and private sectors.
“I am honored to take up the mantle of President of the American Society of Nephrology at this critical juncture for our profession and on behalf of the more than 800 million people around the world affected by kidney diseases.”
Dr. Parikh is Professor of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology and Chief of Nephrology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
“As evidenced by the unprecedented level of new science and innovation featured at Kidney Week 2025, and the release of our TKHR report, nephrology is as an epicenter of innovation and new discovery. My focus for 2026 will be to build on this momentum and target our efforts to more effectively prevent kidney failure, improve transplantation and ultimately achieve a future without kidney diseases.”
Dr. Parikh is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (2017), the American Association of Physicians (2021), and the American Clinical and Climatological Association (2024). Among other honors, he has received the Outstanding Investigator Award from the National Heart Lung Blood Institute (2018), the Sir William Osler Award from the Interurban Clinical Club (2018), and ANIO's Award for Academic Excellence (2021). He also received the 2019 Donald W. Seldin Award from ASN and the American Heart Association and the 2021 STARS award from the state of Texas.
Dr. Parikh graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in chemistry and received the Founders Medal for highest academic standing from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed residency and fellowship training in Nephrology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, where attained the rank of Professor of Medicine.
