Bengaluru, September 25, 2025 - A marital dispute in Bengaluru has escalated into a criminal complaint after a man alleged that his wife demanded ₹2 crore as compensation, citing that their marriage remained unconsummated. He has also accused her and her relatives of assault and harassment. The case raises issues of reproductive health, psychological stress, and the legal boundaries of marital obligations.

According to media reports, the couple: Praveen (age 35) and Chandana (age 29) married on May 5, 2025, in Tarikere, Chikkamagaluru, and moved to Bengaluru afterward. They resided in Saptagiri Palace, Govindaraj Nagar.

Praveen stated in his First Information Report (FIR) that despite living together for months, he and Chandana did not engage in sexual relations. Suspicions mounted three months into the marriage, when Chandana reportedly pressed him to undergo medical tests. Praveen claimed doctors certified him as physically capable but attributed his hesitation to mental stress.

He alleged that from June onward, Chandana began pressing him for ₹2 crore as compensation for what she called a failure to fulfill marital obligations. On August 17, Praveen claimed that Chandana and her relatives forcibly entered his residence, assaulted him and his family members, and intimidated them. In response, he filed a police complaint for assault and harassment. The police have registered a case under relevant provisions.

Under Indian Hindu Marriage Act 1955, failure to consummate can be ground for divorce or annulment of marriage.

Mental Stress & Psychosexual Health

Delays in initiating sexual intimacy can lead to increased anxiety, self-esteem issues, and interpersonal strain. In turn, psychological stress can itself impair sexual performance, creating a vicious cycle. Professional counseling, couples therapy, or psychosexual therapy may help address such barriers. Supporting each other and getting comfortable with each other should be given priority in cases of arranged marriages.

Medical consensus typically holds that inability to consummate a marriage does not always indicate a permanent dysfunction, especially if the physical health system is intact.

Marital Obligations & Legal Liability

Indian law does not uniformly impose a legally enshrined “right to sexual relations” between spouses but at the same time has not criminalised marital rape. Courts have grappled with demands for compensation or alimony based on non-consummation, “conjugal rights,” or marital misconduct. Some judgments allow civil claims in matrimonial proceedings, but such demands are subject to strong scrutiny and proof requirements.

Gender, Social Pressure and Stigma

In many parts of Indian society, sexual expectations, familial pressures, and social norms around masculinity and marital “duties” create intense stress. Men who face sexual dysfunction often avoid seeking help for stigma. In this case, public exposure of such private issues can exacerbate emotional distress for both parties. Even within marriage, consensual participation is foundational. Sexual pressure or coercion may raise ethical or legal concerns. Couples facing intimacy challenges should have access to appropriate medical and psychological evaluation, without stigma, as part of comprehensive reproductive and mental health services.

Legally, not every failure to consummate marriage justifies financial compensation or criminal claims, and courts must balance proof, consent, and equitable relief. As investigations proceed, this case may prompt further discussion about how law, medicine, and rights intersect in intimate relations.
