March 2026: The Darbhanga branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has raised concerns over the safety of doctors following an alleged extortion attempt and disruption at a private hospital in Bihar. The association has written to the district Civil Surgeon seeking immediate intervention and stronger security measures for healthcare professionals.

IMA members warned that incidents involving intimidation of doctors not only threaten medical professionals but also disrupt hospital operations and patient care.

Incident Discussed at IMA Darbhanga Meeting

The issue was discussed during a meeting of the IMA Darbhanga branch held on Saturday evening. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Hari Damodar Singh and attended by more than three dozen doctors from the city.

During the meeting, doctors reviewed a recent incident that allegedly took place at a private hospital run by a doctor couple in Darbhanga. According to the association, individuals accompanying a patient’s relatives reportedly posed as media personnel and created a disturbance at the hospital.

IMA members stated that the group allegedly disrupted hospital functioning, attempted to damage hospital property and tried to pressure the doctors through extortion attempts.

IMA Writes to Authorities Seeking Action

Following the discussion, the association submitted a representation to the district Civil Surgeon demanding a fair and prompt investigation into the incident.

The doctors’ body urged authorities to identify the individuals involved and initiate strict legal action against those responsible. It also requested security protection for the affected doctor couple and called for stronger administrative measures to ensure the safety of doctors and healthcare workers in the district.

IMA Darbhanga emphasized that repeated incidents of intimidation and harassment can create fear among medical professionals and hinder the delivery of uninterrupted healthcare services.

Concern Over Increasing Intimidation of Doctors

The association also expressed concern about what it described as a growing pattern of intimidation and alleged extortion attempts targeting doctors by individuals claiming to be journalists.

IMA members warned that if such incidents are not addressed firmly, they could embolden anti social elements and create an unsafe working environment for doctors.

The association has urged the district administration to take the matter seriously and strengthen security arrangements at hospitals to protect healthcare workers and ensure uninterrupted patient care.
