NBEMS Offers Free Online Course on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education

A six-month online programme by NBEMS aims to equip medical professionals with knowledge of AI tools and applications in clinical practice, education, ethics and patient safety.

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has launched a free online programme on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medical education for postgraduate doctors, trainees, faculty and other medical professionals. The initiative is part of broader efforts to familiarise clinicians and educators with AI’s role in healthcare and will begin in January 2026 and run for six months. Participation is accessible at no cost and requires no prior technical or programming background.

Curriculum and Structure of the AI in Medical Education Programme

The programme will consist of 20 interactive modules, delivered through live online sessions over a six-month period. Each module will address aspects of AI relevant to healthcare and medical education, with a strong focus on clinical applicability, ethics, patient safety and professional accountability.

Sessions are designed to help participants develop an understanding of:

  • Core AI concepts relevant to medicine and healthcare

  • Critical evaluation of AI tools, models and scientific literature for clinical utility and bias

  • Ethical, legal, privacy and cybersecurity considerations in AI use

  • Integration of AI outputs into clinical decision-making

  • Patient-centric reasoning and multidisciplinary teamwork incorporating AI

  • Professionalism, transparency and accountability in using AI-assisted tools across practice, education and research

Sessions will be led by faculty from a range of national and international institutions, including Harvard University, University of Oxford, Mayo Clinic, IISc Bengaluru, IIM Lucknow, and others, reflecting a collaborative approach to global medical education.

Who Can Attend and Eligibility for Course

The programme is open to a broad set of medical professionals, including:

  • NBEMS ongoing postgraduate trainees

  • NBEMS alumni (qualified from 2020 session onwards)

  • Faculty of NBEMS-accredited departments

  • Other registered medical professionals interested in AI applications in healthcare and medical education

Delivery and Attendance Requirements

All sessions will be conducted online via the NBEMS platform. Participants must attend at least 75 % of live sessions, with attendance recorded at both the beginning and end of each class. Completion of an online assessment module is also required to be eligible for a digital course completion certificate.

Interested candidates can register through the official NBEMS portal or the specified course registration page on the natboard.edu.in website (e.g. Sangam portal or dedicated AI course section). Once registered, participants will receive access information and schedules for live sessions.

Objective of the Programme

The NBEMS AI in Medical Education programme aims to equip doctors and educators with the knowledge and judgment needed to critically evaluate and responsibly integrate AI tools into clinical practice and medical teaching, while upholding patient safety, ethical practices and professional accountability.

With artificial intelligence increasingly influencing areas such as clinical diagnostics, treatment planning, educational methodologies, predictive analytics and healthcare systems operations, foundational AI literacy is becoming an important skill for modern medical professionals.
