Key Points:

  • First below knee Jetstream atherectomy performed at SUMUM, Bhubaneswar.

  • Procedure saved patient from leg amputation.

  • Treated critical limb ischaemia caused by arterial blockage.

  • Minimally invasive approach reduced pain and recovery time.

  • Marks major advancement in vascular care in Odisha.

Doctors at SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) in Bhubaneswar successfully prevented a man from losing his leg by performing a below knee advanced endovascular atherectomy using Jetstream technology, a minimally invasive vascular procedure rarely used in the state.

Hospital officials confirmed the intervention marked a major step forward in limb saving treatment and minimally invasive vascular care in Odisha.

First of its Kind Limb Salvage Procedure in Odisha

The surgery was carried out by Dr Sambit Kumar Pattanayak, consultant in interventional radiology, on Tuesday, February 11.

The patient suffered from severe blockage in the arteries of the leg, a dangerous condition that can cause non healing ulcers, gangrene and eventual limb loss if untreated.

Doctors used Jetstream atherectomy, which removes plaque and clots from arteries and restores blood circulation without open surgery.

The procedure was conducted for the first time in the state, marking a breakthrough in minimally invasive vascular treatment.

What Made the Case High Risk

The patient had critical limb ischaemia, where blood flow to the lower limb becomes dangerously low.
Doctors explained treatment becomes especially difficult when blockages occur in small arteries below the knee.

Without restoring circulation, patients often face:

  • Non healing wounds

  • Gangrene

  • Eventual amputation

How Jetstream Atherectomy Helped

Dr. Pattanayak explained the advanced device allows doctors to:

  • Remove plaque and clots

  • Restore blood flow

  • Avoid open surgery

  • Reduce amputation risk

Because the approach is minimally invasive, it also:

  • Reduces pain

  • Shortens hospital stay

  • Speeds recovery

  • Improves limb salvage outcomes

Doctors Call It a New Era for Peripheral Artery Disease Care

Dr. Biraj Mohan Mishra, Chief of Medical Services at SUMUM, said the success signals a new phase in treatment for advanced peripheral artery disease and critical limb ischaemia in Odisha.

Manojranjan Nayak, founder president of Siksha O Anusandhan Deemed to be University and SUMUM, stated the technology reflects the institution’s focus on patient centric care aimed at saving both lives and limbs.
