Warangal, Telangana — A nine-month-pregnant doctor lost her life after a speeding tipper rammed into the motorcycle she was riding in Warangal on Monday night, January 26. The fatal crash has left the city’s medical community shaken and once again raised concerns over road safety on busy urban roads.
The victim, Dr Sali Mamatha Rani, 33, worked as an assistant professor in the General Medicine department at Father Colombo Institute of Medical Sciences in Warangal. She was in the final month of her pregnancy at the time of the accident.
Originally from Bhaktampalli village in Chincholi taluk of Kalaburagi district in Karnataka, Dr Mamatha Rani had been living in Warangal for professional commitments. Colleagues said she remained dedicated to her work and continued hospital duties despite her advanced pregnancy.
The accident occurred on the night of January 26 at the Seven Mori junction on Hunter Road, one of Warangal’s busiest stretches. Dr Mamatha Rani was travelling on a motorcycle with her husband, Dr Raghavendra, after finishing her hospital shift.
A speeding tipper truck allegedly hit the two-wheeler from behind. The impact threw both riders onto the road. Dr Mamatha Rani sustained severe injuries and profuse bleeding following the collision.
Bystanders rushed her to a private hospital in Warangal for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, doctors declared her dead while she was undergoing treatment.
Dr Raghavendra also suffered injuries in the accident but survived. After receiving treatment, he approached the Mattewada police and filed a formal complaint detailing the incident.
The tragedy has devastated the family, as the couple was awaiting the birth of their child in the coming weeks.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and began an investigation. Officers identified the tipper driver, Ansari, a resident of Jharkhand, and took him into custody.
Police officials are probing whether over speeding and negligence led to the fatal accident. Further legal action will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
Residents and healthcare professionals have again flagged the dangers posed by high-speed movement of heavy vehicles on city roads, particularly at night. Hunter Road has witnessed multiple serious accidents involving commercial vehicles.
