A doctor in Gujarat’s Rajkot has been booked for allegedly installing a hidden spy camera inside a clinic and using the footage to blackmail a colleague, with police recovering more than 3,000 video clips during the investigation, according to India Today.

The accused, identified as Dr Kamal Nandha, is suspected to have secretly recorded private moments inside the clinic over a prolonged period and used the material to demand ₹25 lakh from the victim.

The complaint has been registered at the Rajkot Cyber Crime Police Station, and police have named 12 individuals in connection with the case.

Spy camera hidden in bulb holder inside delivery room

According to investigators, the accused installed a spy camera inside a bulb holder in the delivery room of a clinic located on Sadhu Vaswani Road in Rajkot.

The device automatically recorded footage whenever the light was switched on. Police said Dr Nandha periodically removed and replaced the memory card to collect recordings without being detected.

Officials believe the surveillance began in 2023 and continued undetected for a significant duration.

Over 3,000 clips seized; private footage used for blackmail

During the probe, police recovered more than 3,000 video clips, many of which allegedly captured private moments involving the complainant doctor and a female colleague.

Investigators said the accused used these recordings as leverage to threaten the victim with public exposure. He allegedly demanded ₹25 lakh to suppress the videos.

Police confirmed that around ₹50,000 had already been extorted from the victim before the complaint was filed.

Extortion network involved intermediaries posing as journalists

The investigation revealed that the accused did not act alone. Police said the videos were shared with intermediaries, including individuals posing as journalists, who allegedly helped amplify threats and pressure the victim.

Authorities have identified 12 accused so far, and action has been initiated against those involved in circulating or exploiting the footage.

Harassment escalated in 2024

Officials said the intimidation and blackmail intensified in 2024, with repeated threats made to the complainant.

A case has been registered under charges including extortion, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, and provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Motive linked to one-sided relationship

According to police, the crime was driven by a one-sided romantic interest. The accused allegedly targeted the complainant after developing feelings for a female doctor who was reportedly in a relationship with him.

Investigators believe this personal motive led to the use of covert surveillance and blackmail as a means of control and retaliation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Jagdish Bangarva said the accused, who holds a BHMS degree, had access to the clinic, which allowed him to install and maintain the hidden camera without raising suspicion.

Police have seized the recording equipment and are examining digital evidence. Further arrests are likely as the probe continues.
