A newborn and a 25-year-old woman died after delivery at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital on August 26, prompting an inquiry.
Blood transfusion and anesthesia are among the factors being examined.
Two nurses got suspended, while a district hospital panel was assigned to conduct the post-mortem examinations.
A 25-year-old woman, Kalpana Mishra, and her newborn baby died after a cesarean delivery attempted at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, on August 26. Family members demanded an inquiry into alleged medical negligence. A district hospital panel is assigned to conduct the postmortem examinations while two nurses got suspended. Concerns related to the blood arranged from outside the hospital premises and alleged anesthesia overdose have been raised.
According to the Free Press, Kalpana Mishra, a resident of the Mangawan area, was admitted to the hospital on the night of August 25. She underwent a surgical delivery at around 8:30 p.m. on August 26 and gave birth to a baby. Both mother and newborn died shortly afterward.
An inquiry is examining the multiple factors surrounding the deaths. Dr. Rahul Mishra, medical superintendent of Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, told the Free Press,
"Blood was arranged from outside for transfusion before delivery. Prima facie, it is one of the suspected factors. Similarly, an anesthesia overdose is also a point of investigation for the probe panel.”
But somehow these factors cannot be treated as confirmed causes of both the deaths until the medical and post-mortem findings are available. Blood transfusion can carry risks if compatibility, storage or administration requirements are not properly maintained, while anesthesia complications can affect breathing, blood pressure and other vital functions.

Following the deaths, family members protested at the hospital and demanded a proper inquiry. They also alleged serious lapses in the mother's treatment and misconduct by the medical and nursing staff. However, hospital authorities completely denied negligence, as reported in India Today.
The dean of the hospital, Dr. Sunil Agrawal, and Superintendent Dr. Rahul Mishra met the family and assured them of an impartial inquiry. Dr. Rahul Mishra said that an inquiry committee’s report and the post-mortem report were expected by Monday. A panel of doctors from the district hospital was also assigned to conduct the post-mortem examinations, as reported in Free Press.
Therefore, the deaths of the mother and the newborn have led to an immediate administrative action, but the responsibility for the deaths remains to be established. The inquiry and medical reports will be important to determine whether there is negligence in the treatment or other complications related to Kalpana’s delivery that result in the deaths of both her and her newborn.
