What do you do?
I work as a junior dentist at Dr. Thomas Eapen's Dental Clinic in Mysore.
What prompted you to choose this profession?
The balance of professional and personal life usually seen in this profession encouraged me to choose this field.
What is the best part about being a dental student/professional?
I believe it is the uniqueness and finesse of our work.
How do you like spending your free time?
I am a voracious reader and love to spend my day reading. I also enjoy baking bread and learning new languages.
Which is your favorite subject in dentistry and why?
My top favorite subjects had to be General medicine, Orthodontics and Public Health Dentistry.
Medicine is a fascinating subject that brings together Physiology, Pathology and Pharmacology and then everything makes sense.
Orthodontics showcases the fascinating relationship between teeth and bones.
Public Health Dentistry is interesting and caters to the need of the inaccessible population.
Which is your least favorite subject in dentistry?
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a subject I was not keen on exploring. I believe OMFS surgeons need to have spontaneity and passion for the subject both of which I didn't develop over my course period.
What are some studying tips you use to retain and understand things better?
Pictures and flowcharts are the magic words. You can understand and retain pages of text by just skimming through flowcharts and looking through pictures and videos.
Which dental procedure(s) you enjoy/anticipate doing the most?
I loved to fabricate prosthesis. The time and effort into fabricating a denture and the final sitting when we deliver the prosthesis and here the "cluck" of a strong vacuum retention when pulled knows no bounds of happiness.
What do you enjoy more, doing an RCT or extracting teeth?
Extracting a tooth is more enjoyable compared to an RCT.
What are some challenges you face in your professional field?
Importance of oral health is not understood by the Indian population, who view it as a luxury rather than a necessity. Convincing a patient to undergo the advised treatment, explaining the multiple sittings and justifying the costs is a big challenge in this field.
How would your friends describe you?
Focused and Motivated.
What has been the best/ most memorable moment in your dental school so far?
When we released our college newsletter, that we had been working on for months.
Has dentistry impacted your food choices? Like, do you consume less sugary and sticky food items?
I am definitely more conscious now and make it a point to rinse my mouth after consuming sugary foods.
As a dental health professional, what is your dental health care regime?
I brush my teeth twice a day, rinse my mouth after every meal and floss once a day. I also use a soft toothbrush with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
If given a choice, what alternate career would you have opted for?
Chef
Where would you like to work in the future?
I aim to work in global organizations to bring about awareness about oral health
What is your dream travel destination?
Paris and Sweden
Tell us a secret talent(s) that the world does not know about you.
I can't use a mouse with my left hand even though I am left-handed.
What are you not very good at?
Differentiating between red and pink. Wierd but very true.
A quote that resonates deeply with you?
"All you have is now."
