A 100-year-old man, who had suffered a medical emergency and acute unbearable pain due to a major hip joint fracture, underwent a successful hip bone replacement surgery in New Delhi. The surgical procedure performed with the highest standards of asepsis to prevent infection lasted for approximately 90 minutes. The 100-year-old man is currently under rehabilitation and is able to walk normally without any concerns.
S C Kapur, a 100-year-old man, was admitted to a hospital in New Delhi where Dr Rahul Sharma, a senior orthopaedic surgeon and joint replacement expert, advised him an immediate and elective hip bone replacement surgery. Dr. Rahul Sharma, working at Sawan Neelu Angel's Hospital, Saket, Delhi, is an expert in the surgeries involving hip, knee and shoulder. He suggested Kapur that hip replacement surgery was the only solution for his kind of fracture, and associated comorbidities.
A multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, cardiologists, physicians, and intensive care specialists were involved in the surgical intervention. They successfully performed the complex hip arthroplasty surgery (joint replacement surgery) on the 100-year-old man suffering from hip fracture.
A hip fracture is a break in the upper portion of the femur (thighbone). Elderly patients are more prone to hip fractures since their bones have become weakened by osteoporosis. The site of most hip fractures is either at the femoral neck or in the intertrochanteric region, and the location of the fracture plays a significant role in determining the best treatment options.[1] Treatment for hip fracture usually involves a combination of surgery, rehabilitation, and medication to manage pain and to prevent blood clots and infection.[1]
Hip arthroplasty (Hip replacement surgery) is a surgical procedure in which an orthopaedic surgeon removes the damaged parts of the hip joint and replaces them with new, artificial parts.[2] The procedure involves the surgeon making an incision over the thigh and removing the diseased or damaged bone and cartilage from the hip joint. Furthermore, the surgeon replaces the head of the femur and acetabulum with new, artificial parts.[2]
It usually takes at least a few months and at times a year to notice improvements and fully recover from a broken hip. The recovery and rehabilitation period depends upon factors like the age of the patient, their overall health, what caused the fracture, the type of surgery performed, and other injuries suffered.
