In a compelling case that illustrates the critical overlap of mental health challenges and surgical emergencies, doctors at a Delhi hospital successfully treated a 20-year-old man who ingested a shaving razor following an argument with his father. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgency of addressing mental health issues alongside physical health crises.
The young man, grappling with depression and suicidal thoughts, swallowed the razor in two separate pieces: the blade holder and the handle, both of which posed a serious threat to his life. His father's ongoing mental health struggles further compounded the difficulties faced by the family. Imaging studies revealed that the blade holder was stuck in the man’s stomach, while the handle had advanced to the large intestine.
Surgical Intervention:
A specialized team of surgeons, led by Dr. Tarun Mittal and including Dr. Anmol Ahuja, Dr. Shresth Manglik, Dr. Rakesh S, Dr. Karthik Krishna, and Dr. Tanushree Nahata, undertook a two-step surgical intervention to safely remove the foreign objects.
In the first phase, the team performed a laparotomy to access the stomach and extract the blade holder. The second stage involved carefully manipulating the handle, which had traveled to the colon, and removing it via sigmoidoscopy. This approach required meticulous planning and seamless coordination among the medical professionals.
Dr. Mittal described the case as unusual, not only due to the nature of the ingested objects but also because of the psychological dimensions involved. “Managing such cases requires both advanced medical expertise and a compassionate understanding of the patient’s mental health,” he stated.

Raising Mental Health Awareness:
The incident underscores the importance of addressing mental health issues early and removing the stigma that prevents individuals from seeking help. “Many individuals refrain from seeking mental health support due to societal stigma and fear, which can result in harmful consequences like this,” added Dr. Mittal.
The young man’s actions, driven by emotional distress and anger, spotlight the critical need for mental health awareness, both for individuals and within families.
Post-Surgery Recovery and Counseling:
Following the surgery, the patient made a full physical recovery and is now being referred for psychological counseling to tackle his depression and suicidal tendencies. The family is also seeking support to address his father’s mental health challenges, aiming to create a more supportive and stable home environment.
The patient’s mother expressed heartfelt gratitude toward the medical team, saying, “We are immensely thankful to the doctors for their swift intervention and exceptional care.”
A Holistic Approach to Healthcare:
Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, commended the surgical team for their precision and dedication. “This case highlights the importance of a holistic approach to healthcare, where mental health is given the same attention as physical well-being. At Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, we are dedicated to offering comprehensive care to individuals facing such challenges,” he commented.
