
As India grapples with the escalating challenge of mosquito-borne diseases, particularly dengue, Andhra Pradesh is taking a significant leap forward in public health. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department is set to launch a pioneering initiative: the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS), an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered program designed to proactively monitor and control mosquito populations across key municipal corporations.
The Growing Threat of Dengue
The move comes at a critical time.
These figures underscore the immense public health burden and the urgent need for more effective, data-driven interventions. For too long, communities have faced the invisible threat of mosquitoes with often "ineffective" manual methods, leaving families vulnerable to debilitating illnesses like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.
Introducing SMoSS: A Smart Solution
SMoSS promises a transformative shift. At its core, this innovative system leverages AI-powered sensors and drones to meticulously track mosquito species, gender, and density. Imagine a world where instead of "blind spraying," civic teams receive automatic, precise alerts to deploy insecticide only where and when it's most needed.
This targeted approach not only enhances effectiveness but also leads to a reduction in chemical usage and overall costs.
How the System Works
The pilot project will roll out in 66 strategic locations across six major municipal corporations: Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Kakinada, Rajamahendravaram, Nellore, and Kurnool. Integral to SMoSS are Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, providing real-time data on mosquito density alongside crucial environmental factors like humidity and temperature. This granular data empowers authorities to move beyond guesswork, enabling truly smart and responsive pest control.
Furthermore, the system integrates advanced spraying drones, promising faster intervention times and greater efficiency. A central dashboard will offer live data feeds, ensuring seamless oversight of field activities and enabling swift responses during potential outbreaks.
Community Engagement and Accountability
Principal Secretary of MAUD, S Suresh Kumar, and Director P Sampath Kumar emphasized that specialized agencies would manage the project, with performance-linked payments ensuring accountability. The human element remains at the forefront of this technological deployment. Complaints from the public will be tracked via the Vector Control and Puramitra apps, ensuring that community concerns are directly integrated into the response mechanism. Hospitals will contribute by submitting daily reports of dengue, malaria, and chikungunya cases, allowing for rapid identification of hotspots and enabling intensified fogging and larvicidal measures in affected areas.
