On August 9, 2025, in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district, a 14-year-old girl participated in the cherished Raksha Bandhan festival, tying a rakhi to her 33-year-old cousin, Surjeet, symbolizing a brother’s vow to protect his sister. The Raksha Bandhan festival, celebrated across India, is a time of familial bonding and trust. Tragically, mere hours later, on the same night, Surjeet betrayed that trust in the most heinous way. After consuming a large amount of alcohol, he returned to his uncle’s house, where the girl was sleeping, and raped and murdered her, shattering the sanctity of the occasion. The role of alcohol in this crime highlights the need for addressing substance abuse as a public health issue, as it may exacerbate violent tendencies in individuals.
On Saturday morning, 33-year-old Surjeet went to the house of his uncle and got a rakhi tied by his sister. That same night, after consuming a lot of alcohol, he went back to the house and raped the sleeping 14-year-old.
In an attempt to cover up his gruesome act, Surjeet staged the scene to appear as a suicide by hanging the girl’s body from a noose. The girl’s father, sleeping in an adjacent room, heard nothing during the incident and discovered his daughter’s body the next morning, August 10, 2025, prompting him to alert the police.
After killing her, he made it appear as though she had committed suicide by hanging her body from a noose.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police quickly dismissed the possibility of suicide due to the presence of bloodstains in multiple areas of the house, indicating foul play. Further investigation revealed critical forensic evidence, including hair found in the teenager’s nails and hand, suggesting a struggle that could provide key insights into the violent encounter.
A post-mortem examination confirmed the rape, providing undeniable proof of the sexual assault. During the investigation, Surjeet’s behavior aroused suspicion. He was present at the house during police questioning and repeatedly interrupted, answering on behalf of family members and preventing them from speaking freely, which alerted authorities to his potential involvement.
When officials arrived at the house and saw blood stains in multiple areas, along with hair in the teen's hand and nails, they stated they knew it was not a suicide. The forensic science lab in Jhansi has received samples of the suspect's hair for comparison. There will also be a DNA test.
Surjeet’s attempts to mislead the investigation backfired, leading to his detention. Under intense questioning, he confessed to the rape and murder of his young cousin. The police have sent forensic evidence, including hair samples, to the forensic science lab in Jhansi for further analysis, with plans for a DNA test to strengthen the case, underscoring the critical role of forensic science in delivering justice.
The police took him into custody, and the case has sparked outrage in the community, highlighting a profound betrayal of the familial bond celebrated during Raksha Bandhan. Authorities are committed to ensuring justice, with forensic evidence expected to play a pivotal role in securing a conviction.
After being arrested, Surjeet confessed to the crime while being questioned. The police are certain that the evidence will guarantee the victim justice and the punishment of the perpetrator.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Auraiya and beyond, casting a dark shadow over the Raksha Bandhan festival, which is meant to celebrate protection and love between siblings. The brutality of the crime, coupled with the betrayal by a family member, has prompted discussions about the safety of minors and the need for stricter measures to prevent such atrocities.
A separate but related incident mentioned in which a 15-year-old girl in Odisha's Kendrapara district allegedly gang-raped by five people, including a relative, on the same Raksha Bandhan day, August 9, 2025, with the act video-recorded; the relative was arrested and charged under relevant laws.
Mental health experts and community leaders are calling for increased awareness of alcohol-related violence and the implementation of counseling programs to address underlying behavioral issues.
The community awaits justice for the young victim, whose identity remains protected in accordance with Supreme Court directives on cases involving sexual assault.
