A 33-year-old man, Nagesh Veeranna, was found dead this week in Bengaluru, reportedly after participating in a clinical trial organized by Syngene, a research and development company. His body was discovered on Wednesday morning at his brother's house. Revana Siddappa, his brother, claims that Nagesh's death was caused by severe side effects from the trial medications, adding that Nagesh had been healthy prior to the trial.
The Jalahalli Police have opened an investigation into the incident, registering a case of "unnatural death". Siddappa believes that his brother's death resulted from complications linked to the clinical trial. According to reports, Nagesh was admitted to a private hospital's ICU in December before joining the trial. Syngene reportedly offered him experimental tablets and injections as part of the study. Nagesh first visited Syngene's facility on December 9, returning home the same evening. He later returned for a longer visit on December 12.
On December 18, Siddappa received a call from Syngene informing him that Nagesh had been admitted to Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital due to complications. According to the complaint, Nagesh mentioned to his brother that his health declined just 24 hours after receiving the trial medication, which led to severe stomach pain and hospitalization.
After being discharged on December 26, Nagesh continued to undergo check-ups with Syngene. On January 21, the brothers had their usual dinner and went to sleep. However, when Siddappa tried to wake Nagesh the next morning, he found him unresponsive. Siddappa immediately contacted a doctor from Syngene and took Nagesh to the hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.
In response to the incident, Syngene issued a statement expressing condolences to the family. They confirmed that they are following all clinical trial protocols and have reported the matter to the appropriate authorities. They also stated they are fully supporting both the family and the investigation.
The Jalahalli Police investigation is ongoing as they work to understand the events surrounding Nagesh’s tragic death.
