In a shocking revelation that is deeply chilling, a palliative care physician based in Berlin has been officially charged with killing 15 patients. The accused, named by local media as Johannes M., is said to have acted neither out of kindness nor professional malevolence but out of an insatiable "lust to kill." Prosecutors have portrayed a gruesome figure of a man who killed patients with the specific aim of shocking, giving fatal doses of medication to the frail in his charge.

A trend of quiet murders

The suspect, who is 40 years old and a medical practitioner, is charged with killing 12 women and 3 men between September 2021 and July 2024. The age of the victims varied between 25 and 94, and they were all being administered some kind of palliative treatment. Officials claim the physician privately administered a fatal combination of anesthetics and muscle relaxants without their consent or knowledge.

Administered an anaesthetic and a muscle relaxant to his patients... without their knowledge or consent. The relaxant "paralysed the respiratory muscles, leading to respiratory arrest and death within minutes.

The muscle relaxant induces respiratory paralysis, killing victims in minutes, the prosecutor's office says. The deliberate and covert approach to murder evaded families and police for decades.

Fires Set to Conceal the Crimes

In a horrifying twist, prosecutors say on five occasions the suspect even torched victims' homes to try to incinerate evidence. One such was the July 8, 2024, killing of a 75-year-old man in Berlin's Kreuzberg district. Only hours after that, the suspect supposedly killed a 76-year-old woman in adjacent Neukölln. When his arson attempt on her home failed, he supposedly called a relative to raise an alarm and dispel suspicion.

"When he noticed this, he reportedly informed a relative of the woman, claiming that he was standing in front of her apartment and that no one had responded to his ringing," they said.

Deception and a Growing List of Charges

The probe started with a physician questioning four fatalities. But as authorities dug deeper, the number of possible victims increased. By November 2024, the case had been upgraded from manslaughter to murder. The suspect now has 15 charges in the fatalities, each of which was allegedly done with "malicious premeditation."

Prosecutors say the suspect had no motivation, monetary reward, or external coercion. Rather, they say, he acted solely out of a warped lust to kill, characterizing his behavior as motivated by a "lust to kill."

The accused appears to have had no motive for killing the people other than the act of killing itself. The suspect had nothing other than a "lust for murder".

Massive Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched a broad investigation into the suspect’s medical history. A special investigation team is examining 395 potentially suspicious cases involving doctors. Preliminary proceedings have already begun in 95 of these cases. Twelve bodies have been dug out so far to collect forensic evidence, with more planned.

Echoes of other chilling cases

The case of Berlin's doctor is reflected in a similar trial still ongoing in Germany, where a nurse has been accused of giving 26 patients lethal doses of sedatives to purportedly lighten her workload. Nine of the patients were killed. In the case, prosecutors said the nurse was a person who regarded herself as "the master of life and death."

A Call for Justice and Prevention

Prosecutors are not only asking for a life sentence for Johannes M., but also a lifelong prohibition on practicing medicine and preventive detention, steps they feel are required to safeguard the public from such people. As the investigation goes on, officials are intent on revealing the complete scope of the crimes and ensuring justice is served for the victims and their families.
