A glaring clerical error in a transfer order by the Rajasthan Health Department has left a senior medical officer in professional uncertainty for more than three months. Dr. Ranjana Naraniya, who is presently serving as a Senior Medical Officer and Block Chief Medical Officer at Bonli Community Health Center in Sawai Madhopur district, has been wrongly transferred under the name "Nursing Officer" in an order dated January 15, 2025, releasing her for transfer to Umaid Hospital in Jodhpur-but in the capacity of a nursing officer.

Mistaken Identity: From Doctor to Nurse

The mistake happened when Dr Naraniya's name appeared as the 12th item on a transfer list for nursing items, the label next to her name: was "Nursing Officer." This error, acknowledged by health department officials, has yet to be officially rectified, for Dr. Naraniya hasn't yet assumed duty at the new venue because of the confusion concerning her position.

Sawai Madhopur CMHO Dr. Anil Kumar Jaimini was quick to take the error to higher officials after spotting it.

" The transfer letter erroneously designated the doctor as a nursing officer,” he said, adding that he has written to the concerned departments seeking clarification, but no official notification has been given so far.

Delay Correction Frustration

While the department made admissions for the oversight, it has, over the last three months, failed to take action on this, causing increasing frustration. It is said by officials that the delay creates administrative confusion and also affects staffing decisions for both Bonli and Umaid Hospital.

Interestingly, this time, it does not complete the range of mistakes on that January list. Other errors included naming auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) as nursing officers. Those were, however, corrected quickly. However, the case of Dr. Naraniya is still stuck in administrative limbo.

A Larger Problem: Systemic Errors

An official from the health department stated, "Such administrative errors are not uncommon, but mostly such errors are corrected soon." But this case obviously indicates more serious failures in responsiveness at the level of administration that keep the errors lying unattended for a long time.

Until a formal clarification is provided, Dr. Naraniya continues to remain in a grey zone, unable to report to her new assignment, and left waiting for the system to correct the record.
