Dr. KM Cherian, the trailblazing cardiac surgeon credited with performing India’s first heart bypass surgery in 1975, passed away on Saturday at the age of 82. His remarkable contributions to cardiology, particularly in treating newborns and children with complex heart conditions, have left an indelible mark on the field of medicine.
Born in Chengannur, Kerala, Dr. Cherian completed his schooling in his hometown before pursuing medicine at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. He started his professional journey as a lecturer at Christian Medical College in Vellore and subsequently pursued advanced training in cardiac surgery overseas. He trained in Australia and the University of Alabama, widely regarded as a global center for cardiac surgery, gaining expertise that would revolutionize the field in India.
Dr. Cherian established multiple institutions focused on providing advanced cardiac care. The Frontier Lifeline Hospital in Chennai, a 100-bed specialty hospital, has treated pediatric cardiac patients from 21 countries.
In his hometown of Chengannur, the Dr. KM Cherian Institute of Medical Sciences stands as a testament to his vision, offering high-end cardiac, neuro, and gastro treatments.
Dr. Cherian’s work extended far beyond India. One of his proudest achievements was facilitating heart surgeries for 20 Iraqi children in need, a gesture that later played a role in securing the release of Indian hostages in Iraq. This exemplified his belief in the power of medicine as a tool for diplomacy and humanitarianism.
Dr. Cherian’s contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1991. From 1990 to 1993, he held the prestigious role of honorary surgeon to the President of India. In a rare honor, his name is etched on a stone at Kos Island, Greece, the birthplace of Hippocrates, alongside other global medical pioneers.
Pained by the passing of Dr. KM Cherian, one of the most distinguished doctors of our country. His contribution to cardiology will always be monumental, not only saving many lives but also mentoring doctors of the future. His emphasis on technology and innovation always stood out. My thoughts are with his family and friends in this hour of grief.
Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India
Deeply saddened to hear of Dr KM Cherian's passing. His memoir was just released and we had long conversations recently - about the future of innovation and health technology development in India. Certainly a source of inspiration to many, apart from the countless lives he saved!
Dr. Sowmya Swaminathan, Former Chief Scientist of the WHO
He was one of the surgeons who was projecting India's image across the world. He was well renowned in his field and attracted patients from everywhere. That is one thing I admired about him. He was the finder and curer of heart diseases, especially in children born with various defects. He was bold to take on the most challenging cases.
Dr SN Narasingan, Chennai-based Physician of Internal Medicine and Cardiology
Dr. KM Cherian’s contributions to cardiac surgery, his dedication to mentoring future generations of doctors, and his emphasis on technological innovation will remain an inspiration.
