A case was booked against Terna Speciality Hospital and Research Center, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, under the Prevention of Atrocities Amendment Act, 2015 after a 40-year-old man hanged himself and has accounted the hospital authorities for this extreme step in his suicide note. Taking cognizance of this, the Nerul police have lodged a case against the hospital authorities concerned.
Because of the suicide, the Bhim Army carried out a meeting with the concerned hospital management to take action against those found guilty. Also, it warned them of serious action if anything happened to the newborn twins, as they would be held responsible.
The national secretary of the Bhim Army, Ashok Kamble, was quoted as saying, “The hospital staff behaved with absolute lack of humanity. Those accountable need to be punished.” The Bhim Army has decided to protest on August 3 outside the hospital to demand action against the hospital authorities.
A 40-year-old scheduled caste security worker committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling. On July 27th, early in the morning, the man locked himself inside the room and did not open the door for a while, and by the time his wife and brother could open the door, the man hanged himself. He also wrote a suicide note where he stated that the hospital management and authorities were responsible for his death.
All this started when the deceased wife eight months into the pregnancy complained of discomfort, and sonography was carried out, which revealed that an immediate C-section was required, after which the wife was admitted to Terna Hospital. At Terna Hospital, a C-section was done, and male twins were born. Due to the premature delivery, the twins had to be kept in the NICU for treatment. The couple had conceived after 12 years of marriage.
The deceased brother said that during this time the man was asked to pay bills daily, and he compensated around 90,000, and still 80,000 was pending. He also said that a day before the death, his brother was threatened to clear the pending bills by the hospital management; otherwise, they would stop the treatment of the newborn twins.
Based on a complaint to the police, a case was registered under various sections,
1) Section 108 (abetment of suicide);
2) Section 3(5) (joint criminal liability) along with;
3) Section 3(2) (V) (offenses punishable with a term of 10 years or more against an SC/ST on the ground that the person is an SC/ST) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2015.
The relatives have demanded that the deceased body will only be taken for final rites after strict action is taken against the hospital authorities responsible.
