MP: Stray Dog Seen Carrying Infant's Body Inside Hospital Premises
In a disturbing incident from Madhya Pradesh’s Mhow, a dog was seen carrying a newborn’s body in its jaws inside the government hospital premises. The incident happened on Saturday and has now triggered a full-blown investigation.
What happened
The whole thing came to light after a security guard at Civil Hospital in Mhow, around 25 km from the district headquarters, spotted a dog roaming with the infant’s body. He immediately shooed the dog away and retrieved the child. According to hospital sources, the body had already been partially eaten.
CCTV footage later revealed that a 17-year-old girl had entered the hospital around 9 pm on Friday, complaining of stomach pain, and was admitted. Sometime between 1.30 am and 2 am, she was seen heading towards the toilet. It’s suspected she delivered the baby there and quietly left the hospital soon after with an unidentified man.
Mhow Civil Hospital’s in-charge, Dr. H.R. Verma, told Press Trust of India, “As per the CCTV footage, the incident happened between 1:30 am and 2 am. A young girl was seen going into the toilet during this period. When we checked with staff, we found that a 17-year-old had come here complaining of colic and had been admitted at 9 pm on Friday. We suspect the girl gave birth to a child in the toilet.”
Some officials believe the child may have been stillborn and that the dog picked up the body from the toilet area. The post-mortem was done on Saturday morning, and preliminary reports suggest it was a premature delivery. The final report is still awaited.
How officials are investigating
A five-member team, led by District Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. B.S. Saitya, visited the hospital on Sunday to investigate the incident. The team includes Dr. Sharad Gupta, Dr. Hemant Gupta, Dr. Roopali Joshi, and Dr. Bhupendra Shekhawat. They spoke to doctors, nurses, ward boys, paramedics, and security guards to piece together what really happened.
Hospital in-charge Dr. H.R. Verma told reporters that there are 35 CCTV cameras installed across the hospital and the full footage will be handed over to the police. Mhow Police Station in-charge Rahul Sharma believes the CCTV evidence could help trace the girl who delivered the baby.
Dr. Verma also shared that stray dogs often enter the premises at night, especially through a gate near the storeroom, one of the three gates that usually remain open after hours.
What’s next
Dr. Verma has now ordered that all entry points be shut at night and that a guard be stationed near the main gate to monitor any suspicious activity and keep dogs away. The investigation is still underway.
Just five days before this, a four-year-old boy was violently attacked leading to death by stray dogs on Suwasra-Runija Road in Mandsaur district. Incidents like these highlight how serious the stray dog issue has become, especially near public spaces like hospitals.
