Organophosphorus Poisoning Behind Mysterious Deaths in J&K’s Rajouri: Experts Reveal

According to experts, the spate of unexplained deaths in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, in which at least 17 people have died, has been attributed to organophosphorus poisoning. Authorities have administered an antidote, atropine, which has shown positive results in hospitalized patients. “We have used atropine antidote and it's worked well. After the exact nature of the toxin was determined we gave atropine to patients” said a senior official.

What is this Mysterious outbreak?

Initially shrouded in mystery, the outbreak was traced after extensive testing, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India confirmed that organophosphorus toxins were responsible for the deaths in Badhaal village. The revelation has sparked an intense investigation into whether the contamination of food and water sources was accidental or intentional.

“Now it's a matter of investigation if the use of organophosphorus in the food and water is homicidal or accidental,” said an official.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to determine whether the contamination of food and water was accidental or deliberate. The affected village of Badhal has been declared a containment zone where more than 200 people have been kept in quarantine. Authorities discovered pesticides in a local spring, which has been sealed off pending further investigation.

Doctors noted that the victims showed symptoms associated with damage to the brain and nervous system, consistent with organophosphorus poisoning. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to prevent further deaths and identify the source of the poisoning.
