A cosmetic treatment that permanently alters eye color has drawn attention for an ophthalmologist in Los Angeles, eliciting divergent opinions on online forums.

Los Angeles-based ophthalmologist Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler, 57, has gained popularity for this operation by showing his 3.4 million TikTok followers and more than 319,000 Instagram admirers striking before-and-after transformations.

Why not alter the color of one's eyes if one chooses to get Botox, face lifts, and breast augmentation? It's cosmetic surgery for the eyes.

Q

What is the procedure ?

A

To be able to permanently alter the cornea's color, keratopigmentation is a procedure which includes injecting pigment into the cornea. The procedure, which takes 15 to 20 minutes each eye, generates a new shade of iris in place of the natural one. Since numbing drops are administered to patients, the procedure is essentially painless.

But the cost of this cosmetic transformation is high—$6,000 for each eye, or $12,000 (about ₹10 lakh).

According to Dr. Brian, there is "no loss of vision in healthy eyes without prior LASIK," establishing the procedure's "extreme safety."

A circular tunnel is made in the cornea during the procedure using a sophisticated laser. The pigment is then injected to provide the appropriate eye color soon after the tunnel has been expanded to naturally merge with the cornea's edge. Recovery takes less than a day, and the shift happens promptly.

Light sensitivity or scratchiness are examples of transient side effects that might occur but typically subside away quickly.
Though honey gold, steel grey, and olive green continue to be the most popular colors, patients can also select from emerald green, evergreen, riviera blue, and Paris blue.In contrast, Dr. Brian likes to see his patients' responses, stating, "My patients are amazed after the procedure."

The process has caused some social media users to feel apprehensive. One person said, "This is so creepy" "This feels so dystopian," said another. "This is scarier than any horror film I have seen," a third user remarked.

Dr. Brian thinks that the procedure can have a significant psychological effect in spite of the skepticism.

Furthermore, he pointed out that it can boost self-confidence, particularly if the new eye color has cultural or personal meaning.

Many individuals see their eye colour as integral to their identity and choose to change it for self-expression or to enhance alignment between their inner self and outward appearance

While the process is becoming more popular, some people think it still needs to be modified. “I like the concept; however, it looks like it needs more work. Maybe in the years to come, the science will improve the scary ass."
