Potholes have always been a source of frustration, delays and tragedies—but this time, one became a sign of hope, shock, and nothing short of a miracle for a family in Haryana. The very roads we blame turned out to be a blessing for 80-year-old Darshan Singh Brar.

The Moment Everything Changed

Darshan Singh Brar, a heart patient and resident of Nising near Karnal, had not been keeping well for days. According to one of his grandsons, Balwan Singh, it was his brother who took their grandfather to a hospital in Patiala. He was on a ventilator for four days before doctors declared him dead. His heart had stopped, and he was taken off life support.

After being declared dead by the doctors, Brar’s body was being taken by his family from a hospital in Patiala, Punjab, to his hometown, Nising. The wood was collected for the funeral, food had been laid out, and mourning relatives had gathered to pay their respects.

But as Brar’s body was being transported back home, that one pothole changed everything.

While crossing the highway, the ambulance hit a pothole, and Brar’s grandson noticed something unexpected, Brar's hand moved. Sensing a heartbeat, he immediately asked the driver to rush to the nearest hospital. There, doctors confirmed that Brar was alive and referred him to NP Rawal Hospital in Karnal. He remains in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment.

“My brother in Patiala informed us around 9 am on Thursday about our grandfather's death, and he was getting him to Nising (roughly 100 km away) in an ambulance for his last rites. We had informed our relatives and other local residents who knew him and they had already gathered to mourn his passing. A tent had been set up and food had also been arranged for the mourners. We had also got wood for the cremation,” said Balwan Singh.

We cannot say that the patient had died. When he was brought to us, he was breathing and had blood pressure as well as a pulse. We don't know what happened at the other hospital, whether it was a technical error or something else.

"It is a miracle. Now we are hoping that my grandfather recovers soon,” said Balwan Singh. “Everyone who had gathered to mourn his death congratulated us, and we requested them to have the food we had arranged. It is God's grace that he is now breathing and we are hoping he will get better.”
