Renowned Ophthalmologist Dr. Atul Kamath Felicitated with Ophthalmic Heroes of India Award

Dr. Atul Kamath, an eminent consultant ophthalmologist at Yenepoa Medical College, has been felicitated with the prestigious International Ophthalmic Heroes of India Award. The honor has been bestowed upon him at the 82nd annual All India Ophthalmological Conference, which was recently held in Kolkata. Presented by the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), the award lauded Dr. Atul's groundbreaking research focused on safeguarding the ocular health of ICU patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the peak of the second wave of the pandemic, Dr. Atul spearheaded an extensive study in collaboration with his wife, Dr. Aditi Pai, and under the guidance of Dr. Indravan Vasava, an assistant professor at Baroda Medical College and Sir Sayaji Rao Hospital in Vadodara. The title of Dr. Atul’s paper was “Impact of Ocular Care Training of Nursing Staff on the Incidence of Ocular Surface Disorder Among Intensive Care Patients". Formerly, he presented the paper at the 41st Congress of the ESCRS in Vienna, Austria, held from September 8–12, 2023, and won the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Trainee Bursary Award.

AIOS International Ophthalmic Heroes of India Award in recognition of winning the trainee bursary award at ESCRS 2023. The study was performed with 20 nursing staff members participating in Vadodara. Participants received training on eye care for 30 days, including how to recognize dangerous symptoms and how to notify an ophthalmologist if they did.

Dr. Atul also presented a paper titled "A Demographic Profile and Awareness Study of Hyperthyroidism among Patients in Western India" during the 82nd annual AIOS conference. In the study, the doctor highlighted that females were more commonly affected in the age group of 60 to 69. The majority of female patients were affected by treatment and unaware of the disease. Patients of lower socio-economic classes were off treatment and unaware of the disease. Dr. Atul has also presented another paper titled "To study the prevalence of thyroid eye signs in patients of thyrotoxicosis in Western India" which was co-authored by his wife, Dr. Aditi. The study mentioned that not all patients suffering from hyperthyroidism necessarily have symptoms or signs of hypothyroidism.
