In a big leap for Indian medical students pursuing medicine abroad, Russia has boosted its medical education by introducing 2,000 additional seats, bringing the number to 10,000 in 2024. The decision was announced by Valerii Khodzhaev, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Chennai, based on the rising demand for quality medical education from Indian students.

Russia Fully Aligns with India's Medical Education Norms

Now, Russia is the only foreign nation to be fully in line with India's National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines from time to time for medical education overseas. Due to this, Russian universities have become a trusted and sought-after option among thousands of Indian students annually.

Indian students have been visiting Russia for medical studies for more than six decades," Khodzhaev added. "Russian universities are well known around the world for their high quality, and they still attract students looking for a solid academic background and innovative medical education."

Scholarships and assistance for Indian students

Apart from the seat increase, the Russian government will also continue its annual 100% scholarship program, providing full grants to 200 Indian students in 2024. The scholarships include tuition for undergraduate, postgraduate, and specialist courses at leading universities in Russia.

Students from India have been admitted to Russian universities for the last 60 years. Russia continues to be the top choice for Indian students seeking medical education abroad. Every year, thousands of Indian students head to Russia to pursue a prestigious, globally recognised, and affordable education.

Deputy Consul and Director of Russian House Alexander Dodonov emphasized the objective of the initiative:

"As in the past, the Russian government’s annual 100 per cent scholarship programme will award grants to 200 Indian students this year as well. This will enable them to pursue bachelor's, master's, specialist, and postgraduate programmes at Russia’s leading universities free of cost," he said.

Russian Education Fair Coming to Tamil Nadu Cities

To further empower students and parents, the All-India Russian Education Fair 2025-26 will also be organized at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Chennai on May 10 and 11. Equally, other programs are envisaged for Coimbatore, Salem, and Tiruchirappalli.

The fair will have participation from top Russian institutions like:

  • Volgograd State Medical University

  • Kazan State Medical University

  • Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University

  • Moscow Aviation Institute

  • National Research Nuclear University

  • Moscow State Regional University

In addition to medical education, the fair will also showcase programs in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and data science, which appeal to students with STEM interests.

Why Russia tops the list

Russian universities are still drawing Indian students for their:

Low-cost tuition and living costs

  • English-medium courses

  • High-quality, NMC-approved medical curriculum

  • Seasoned professors and state-of-the-art facilities

Experts suggest that the rising demand for medical studies, coupled with Russia's proactive support and growing opportunities, makes it an ideal destination for Indian students aiming to become healthcare professionals.
