A senior doctor assaulted a junior resident doctor in Thane after a disagreement occurred between them. This incident happened on the day before Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) decided to hold a meeting on the conflicts between resident doctors and senior doctors in the state.

The senior doctor, who is working at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, which is run by Thane Municipal Corporation, was sent on compulsory leave for 30 days. He assaulted the junior resident doctor in the hospital over a disagreement.

On Friday, in the operating room, the senior and junior resident doctors had a disagreement about referring a patient to a hospital in Mumbai as the patient arrived late the previous day. The senior doctor, after questioning admission-related queries, slapped the junior resident doctor over an argument. This incident caused the resident doctors of the hospital to report a complaint to their hospital dean.

The junior resident doctors after the incident, wrote a letter to the Dean stating that the senior doctor had been doing inhuman acts like abusing junior doctors physically and mentally, which made them unable to perform their duties in their respective departments to give their best.

The Thane Municipal Commissioner, after taking the complaint, requested the Dean of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital for a report on the incident. The report was submitted on Saturday afternoon, in which it was mentioned that the administration had sent the senior doctor on compulsory leave for 30 days, and his duties were transferred to his colleague.

The junior resident doctors stated that they were unsatisfied with the compulsory leave of the senior doctor and wanted the authorities to take severe action on the incident.

Similarly, last December in Mumbai, the Head of Department (HOD) of Dermatology in J.J. Hospital was transferred from the hospital due to a protest by 900 resident doctors in the hospital for a long time, as the HOD has been alleged to be a dictator and caused the department to have a toxic work culture.

The resident doctors were on massive leave for 11 days, and this made the HOD of Dermatology to be transferred from J.J. Hospital to Government Medical College in Aurangabad.

The resident doctors of the Dermatology Department at J. J. Hospital met Maharashtra’s Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif to resolve the issue and received assurance from the Minister.
