A 17-year-old boy recently expressed his gratitude on social media for surviving a life-threatening surgery performed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. Harshit Sharma, who took to Reddit to share his story, posted a photograph of himself in a hospital bed alongside his discharge summary to authenticate his claims.

According to the shared documents, Harshit had been diagnosed with kyphoscoliosis, a severe spinal condition causing an abnormal curvature of the spine, resulting in a hunched back. To address the condition, he underwent a critical surgery on October 25.

In his post, Harshit recounted the challenging journey he faced during and after the procedure. He shared that the surgery involved significant risks, requiring nine units of blood to be transfused. He was kept in the ICU for two days post-surgery.

“I had more than 65 stitches, and the pain was so unbearable that even multiple painkillers could not provide relief,” Harshit wrote. He revealed that he was unable to eat for ten days following the surgery and faced additional complications due to a pre-surgery procedure involving hair removal on his back.

Despite the overwhelming difficulties, the teenager expressed his thankfulness for being alive. “I am so glad I survived,” he said. Harshit also acknowledged those who had donated money to support his medical expenses and addressed individuals who had questioned his credibility. To reinforce the authenticity of his situation, he attached his discharge summary from AIIMS Delhi.

An Appeal for Financial Assistance

In the same post, Harshit made a heartfelt plea for financial support, explaining that the funds raised previously were insufficient to cover the costs. “This is my final request for financial help. The funds raised earlier did not even reach half of what is needed. My financial situation remains difficult due to ongoing expenses after the surgery,” he wrote.

The post quickly garnered attention, receiving over 900 upvotes on Reddit. Numerous users empathized with Harshit’s struggles and offered assistance. While some suggested organizations that could help with funding, others contributed small amounts and shared words of encouragement.

Support and Reactions from the Community

Comments poured in from users applauding Harshit’s courage and determination. One user remarked on the flaws in the healthcare system, saying, “How messed up this system is. Many would prefer dying than paying these absurd medical bills. Stay strong champ. Your disease lost, you won.”

Others expressed their solidarity through donations and well-wishes. “Donated a small amount. Best wishes—you’re a true fighter,” one comment read. Another wrote, “Made a mini contribution as my financial situation isn’t great. You are very brave, and I hope you recover safely to achieve your dreams.”

Background of the Condition

According to details provided on a crowdfunding platform, Harshit has been battling Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 (SMA II) along with severe scoliosis since birth. The progressive nature of scoliosis had caused him immense pain and disrupted his daily activities, including his education. Despite these challenges, Harshit has remained committed to pursuing his studies and long-term aspirations.
