A heartbreaking accident in the early hours of Tuesday morning claimed the lives of five individuals, including two children, when a speeding lorry collided with a group of nomadic people resting along the National Highway near JK Theatre in Nattika, Thrissur, Kerala. The accident took place at approximately 4 a.m.

Victims of the Tragedy

The accident claimed the lives of Kaliyappan (50), Nagamma (39), Bangazhi (20), Jeevan (4), and Vishwa (1), who were all from Govindapuram, Palakkad. The group, part of a nomadic community, had temporarily settled near the highway where construction work was underway. In addition to the fatalities, seven others were injured, with three reported to be in critical condition. They were promptly taken to the Government Medical College Hospital for medical care.

Details of the Accident

The accident occurred when a lorry, traveling from Kannur to Kochi, ignored a traffic diversion sign and entered a construction zone. The vehicle lost control, crashed into a barricade, and struck the group of people who were asleep on the roadside.

Some victims were trapped under the lorry, and severed body parts were discovered at the scene. A rescue operation was swiftly launched by local police and residents.

Arrests Made in Connection with the Accident

The authorities promptly detained the lorry driver, Alex (33), along with the cleaner, Jose. It has been alleged that both individuals were impaired by alcohol during the incident. Non-bailable charges of culpable homicide (IPC 304) have been pressed against them. Investigations revealed that the cleaner, who did not hold a valid driver's license, was behind the wheel when the accident occurred.

Cause of the Crash

Kerala’s Transport Minister, Ganesh Kumar, expressed deep concern over the incident, attributing it to drunken driving. Both the driver and cleaner admitted to consuming alcohol before their journey, having purchased liquor from Mahe. Minister Kumar assured the public that strict action would be taken against the accused, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Government’s Response to the Tragedy

In the aftermath of the accident, the District Collector of Thrissur, Arjun Pandian, visited the site to assess the situation. He confirmed that inquest procedures were underway and assured the public that the government would assist in facilitating the return of the victims’ bodies to their home areas. The Collector also stated that the police had been instructed to submit a detailed investigation report, ensuring that justice is served for the victims.
