A fight between a nurse and a doctor at Maharaja Jitendra Narayan Medical College and Hospital (MJNMCH), Coochbehar, West Bengal, has led to complaints filed by both parties.

According to sources, on the afternoon of May 4th, 2024, a blood sample had to be drawn from a patient in the female medical ward at MJN Medical College and Hospital. The nurse posted in the ward was unable to carry out the task and sought assistance from the doctor on duty. The doctor did not receive this request kindly and rebuked her, saying that it was not his duty but hers to collect blood samples. The nurse claims that he shoved her and used poor language, while the doctor says, he was verbally abused.

According to reports, later, when the nurse informed the senior doctors on duty about the incident, they did not give much weight to the matter. So, she filed a formal complaint with the authorities against the doctor on the grounds of misbehavior and assault.

The nursing staff protested against the incident and demanded intervention by the authorities.

According to sources, Rajeev Prasad, the Medical Superintendent and Vice Principal of MJN Medical College and Hospital has said that a five-member inquiry committee will be formed, consisting of senior doctors, nursing staff, and female medical officers. He has also ordered the committee to bring in the reports after the investigation within 72 hours, starting on May 6th, 2024. He has emphasized that due to the different versions of the story being recited, there is an increased need for a thorough and fair investigation, assuring that appropriate action will be taken, according to the reports submitted by the committee.
