In a now-viral Social Media post, a woman recounted a frightening encounter with her employer that has resonated with social media users. When she attended a family crisis a relative was having cancer surgery, she was coerced by her manager into giving damning proof of her absence, such as her GPS location, hospital photos, and medical records.

The situation, posted on X (previously Twitter), involved a screenshot of her dialogue with her boss. In it, she had already explicitly explained to her team leader that she would be missing a planned seminar at work because of a medical crisis. Regardless, her manager reportedly demanded that she go to the seminar and then asked to know her whereabouts later.

"There was a seminar at work yesterday. I had already told my team lead I wouldn't be able to attend. But the manager told me to come yesterday. I told him that a family member had cancer surgery, and this happened," she said as she shared the screenshot.

Disrespect and gaslighting.

What followed was a series of confrontational messages from the manager, who allegedly ignored her explanations and continued to press her for personal evidence. When the woman pointed out that his behavior was insulting, the manager became defensive and allegedly responded with disrespect.  "When I told him he was being disrespectful, he got offended and said I am in no position to tell him how to do his job," she said in another post.

The scenario escalated further when the manager reportedly used the words "You were supposed to have surgery?" (Were you supposed to have surgery?) repeatedly in a bid to downplay the cause of her absence. In her post, she claimed he repeated the line over 20 times during the heated argument, questioning her reason for needing to be at the hospital.

"Then he repeated the line 'Tum ne surgery karni thi?' (Were you supposed to perform the surgery?) at least 20 times, insisting he was right to ask," she added.

A bold reaction: Resignation in response to an insult

The ordeal did not end there. The woman claimed that after a nearly 30-minute shouting match, her manager instructed her to head home and send a full apology email with hospital records. She gave in her resignation instead.

"I sent him a resignation letter instead," she said, garnering broad sympathy from social media users who commended her boldness and condemned toxic workplace culture.

Workplace Compassion: More Than Just a Bullshit Word

The episode has reminded people about the value of compassion, respect, and boundaries within the workplace. While employers can justifiably ask for accountability, asking for intrusive personal proof at an emotional time oversteps the mark.

The popular post is a reminder to us all: Compassion should never compromise on policy.
