The family of a 33-year-old bus driver from Chandigarh opted for organ donation, giving a new lease on life to four critically ill patients. The family of the deceased made the brave decision to donate his organs once he was declared brain dead on Saturday. Their noble act gave new hope to four patients suffering from different organ malfunctions. The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh facilitated this courageous decision, ensuring that his heart, kidneys, and liver were successfully retrieved and transplanted to those in critical need.
Jatinder Singh, a resident of Anaitpura, Saidpura in Fatehgarh Sahib, suffered severe head injuries in a road accident on February 12. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals at PGIMER, he was declared brain dead on February 22 after the mandatory brain stem death certification procedures.
Following his passing, Jatinder Singh’s father, Kesar Singh, consented to organ donation in a heart-wrenching yet inspiring gesture of humanity. The procedure involved retrieving the donor's organs and transplanting them into the bodies of four recipients.
This act of supreme generosity has allowed him to live on, not only through the lives he saved but also in the minds of millions inspired by his selflessness.
Appreciating the noble act by Jatinder Singh’s family, PGIMER Director Vivek Lal commented, "Organ donation is the purest expression of humanity, where loss transforms into hope. Jatinder Singh’s family has shown unparalleled selflessness."
Timely intervention and seamless coordination between the PGIMER medical team and the donor's family were crucial in ensuring the successful retrieval and transplantation of his organs.
The institute is renowned for its efforts to promote organ donation, with a mission to transform such tragedies into life-saving opportunities for many.
Organ donation can be done in two ways:
By pledging for organ donation while a person is alive.
By the consent of family members after death. [1]
Once written consent is obtained, the organs are harvested from the donor's body. The organs can either be transplanted directly into the recipient’s body or preserved for further transport and transplant.
The transplant coordination team carries out the entire process until the deceased’s relatives receive the body, ensuring that no disfigurement occurs during the procedure. [1]
