India’s leading tertiary care hospitals have again appeared in the latest global hospital rankings released by Newsweek in collaboration with Statista. The 2026 list places institutions such as AIIMS New Delhi, Medanta Gurugram, PGIMER Chandigarh, and CMC Vellore among the world’s top hospitals, indicating India’s continued representation in international healthcare benchmarking.
The World’s Best Hospitals rankings compare healthcare institutions across multiple countries using a standardized evaluation process. The 2025–2026 edition reviewed hospitals worldwide and published both global and country-specific lists.
Several Indian centers secured positions within the global top 250, while many others appeared in the broader national rankings. The inclusion reflects the participation of both public and private Indian hospitals in global performance comparisons.
Among the Indian institutions highlighted in the 2026 rankings are:
Medanta – The Medicity, Gurugram
Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh
Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore
These hospitals represent major referral centres known for tertiary and quaternary care services.1
The annual rankings are produced by Newsweek in partnership with Statista, a global data analytics firm.1 The project surveys thousands of medical professionals and compiles hospital performance indicators from participating countries.
The goal is to provide a comparative overview of hospital performance that can be used by patients, healthcare administrators, and policymakers.
The ranking framework combines several measurable and perception-based components. Key parameters include:
International survey of medical experts
Patient experience indicators
Hospital quality and safety metrics
Adoption of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs)
Each hospital receives a composite score based on weighted performance across these domains. The methodology attempts to balance objective data with professional assessment, although the availability of quality metrics may differ between countries.1
International hospital rankings serve as one of several tools used to compare healthcare institutions across borders. They are often referenced by patients seeking advanced care, by hospital administrators for benchmarking, and by policymakers monitoring health system performance.
For India, consistent inclusion of major hospitals reflects the country’s expanding tertiary care infrastructure and its visibility in global healthcare evaluations. At the same time, rankings should be interpreted alongside local quality indicators and clinical outcomes.
Beyond the top global list, dozens of Indian hospitals were included in the country-level rankings for 2026. This indicates wide participation from both government-funded and private sector institutions. Most highly ranked centers remain concentrated in metropolitan regions where advanced medical infrastructure is available.
