England midfielder Jordan Henderson has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after fracturing his wrist during celebrations following England's Round of 16 victory over Mexico. England head coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Henderson will undergo surgery, ending his participation in the tournament, as reported in Sky Sports.
The injury occurred after England defeated Mexico 3-2 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to secure a place in the World Cup quarterfinals. Henderson, who remained an unused substitute during the match, joined teammates and fans in the post-match celebrations.
According to BBC, Henderson fell while climbing over an advertising board near the pitch and landed awkwardly on his wrist. Medical staff immediately attended to him before transporting him from the field on a stretcher. He was later taken to a hospital in Mexico City for further assessment and treatment.
Following medical evaluation, England head coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Henderson had sustained a serious wrist injury that requires surgery. The midfielder remained in Mexico for treatment instead of returning with the England squad to its training base.
He said on BBC One,
Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad. It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.

His injury means he will miss the remainder of the tournament, including England's upcoming quarterfinal against Norway.
In a YouTube analysis of the incident, a sports medicine physician Dr. Brian Sutterer, MD said the mechanism of the fall may have transmitted force beyond the wrist. Reviewing the footage, the doctor noted that Henderson's elbow appeared unable to bend normally, preventing it from absorbing the impact.
He also pointed to a visible deformity in the forearm and observed that Henderson immediately grasped the area after the fall. Based on the video alone, the physician said the injury "almost certainly" appeared consistent with a fracture involving both forearm bones.
However, this assessment was based solely on publicly available footage and has not been confirmed by England's medical team, which has officially reported a wrist fracture requiring surgery.
Obviously the elbow is not able to bend, the wrist is not able to absorb that load. We see that deformity come through in the forearm itself. We see where he grabs on the forearm, almost certainly a both bone forearm fracture.

Henderson featured only once for England during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making a substitute appearance against Panama. Although he did not play against Mexico, he was part of the matchday squad and joined the team's celebrations after the final whistle.
The injury brings an early end to Henderson's fourth FIFA World Cup campaign with England.
