Dr. Alwin from Kerala has won two gold medals for India at the World Medical Games. Currently working as an associate professor of community medicine, he had no idea that his early interest in athletics would one day help him bring glory to the country.

His Journey

Dr. Alwin, a resident of Alappad in Thrissur and currently working at Government Medical College (GMC), Idukki, discovered his passion for sprinting during school—a passion that helped shape his journey to this achievement.

In an interview with The New Indian Express, he recalled how his journey with sports began during school, and later, while studying MBBS, he represented Ernakulam Government Medical College and the university in athletics.

“However, like many others, the demands of medicine soon became a priority and sports took a back seat,” said Dr. Alwin.

He shared that his students at Ernakulam and Idukki, along with officials from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Cochin chapter, encouraged him to resume training. His family also supported and motivated him to follow his passion.

Taking their advice to heart, he began training under Asian Games gold medallist Joseph Abraham. He later won silver medals at IMA national sports meets in Vijayawada and Aurangabad, and also bagged gold at the Masters Athletics Championship (MAC) open nationals—experiences that paved the way for his big international moment.

His Big Win

Alwin, the only Keralite to represent India at the event, won gold in both the 100m and 200m sprint events at the recently held World Medical Games in Spain. He said those earlier competitions helped him prepare mentally and physically for the global stage.

He also spoke about the friendships he built during the event.

At the event, healthcare professionals of various age groups from over 50 countries are bound together by a passion for sports rather than nationality. Winning gold for India in the 100m and 200m events, especially while competing against strong finalists from France and Algeria, was an emotional moment.

The games aim to foster a spirit of health, fitness, and international camaraderie through competition in a wide range of sports, including athletics, football, tennis, swimming, and more. First organized in 1978, the event is recognized today as one of the largest international sporting gatherings for those in the medical field, highlighting the importance of balancing professional life with physical well-being and teamwork.

An Indian Army team also secured a medal at the same event.
