The Government Medical College and ESIC Hospital in Coimbatore is set to open a standalone nursing college during the current academic year, pending state government approval. The 38-acre campus, which currently accommodates a 510-bed hospital, 100 MBBS students, and five MD students, has earmarked an existing renovated block initially refurbished during the COVID-19 pandemic for this purpose.
Dean Dr. M. Raveendran confirmed that the proposal seeks authorization for 100 nursing seats, including 60 for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc Nursing) and 40 for Post-Basic BSc Nursing designed for diploma holders from this institution. Since no new government nursing colleges have been launched in Tamil Nadu over the past four years, the medical college's appeal focuses on utilizing its fully equipped facility and qualified teaching staff to address the region’s nursing training needs.
The government inspection team recently evaluated the campus infrastructure to determine the site’s readiness for academic expansion. Unlike typical government facilities, the ESIC hospital currently provides emergency care and vaccinations, with an existing autopsy unit, a national first among ESI hospitals operational since July 22, 2022
The proposed nursing college is expected to relieve regional pressure caused by limited recent growth in government-run nursing schools. When approved, the fully functional block managed under Dr. Raveendran's leadership will transition from pandemic response to academic service, ensuring an established learning environment. Faculty recruitment is anticipated to align with government-mandated norms once seats are allotted.
This project is planned on a 38-acre site. The addition of nursing courses will further enhance the institution’s multidisciplinary approach to healthcare training.
The initiative aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader health education goals, where no fresh nursing schools have emerged from government in recent years, a gap this project aims to fill. With infrastructure, faculty, and state-level support converging, the institution is well-positioned to boost the nursing workforce and expand healthcare education capacity across the region.
