Dr. Wladimir Lorenz, founder of “Have My Baby in Miami,” invoked his Fifth Amendment right during a U.S. House hearing examining the crime of birth tourism in the States. Many foreign nationals enter the US to deliver their babies so that the child gets US citizenship, and certain doctors profit by providing this service.
According to the reports, the investigators were looking for health clinics and doctors who might be advertising and encouraging this service. They may be marketing maternity services for foreign nationals who are seeking US citizenship for their babies.
Lorentz was one such doctor who openly advertised the service on his website. In the hearing, he was asked how many foreign national mothers he helped deliver in the US, to which Lorentz invoked his Fifth Amendment Right against self-incrimination.
Task Force Chairman Brandon Gill asked Dr. Lorenz whether “Have a Baby in Miami” branded itself as a birth clinic for foreign nationals and whether it facilitated the entry of foreign couples who sought to give birth in the US.
Lorenz declined to answer any questions regarding his clinic and the services that he provided.
When Chairman Brandon Gill asked him how many foreign national kids he might have delivered because his website boasts of delivering more than 2000 babies. Dr. Lorenz invoked his Fifth Amendment right.
Brandon Gill displayed necessary material to support the claims; however, Dr. Lorenz made no comments on any of the claims against him.
According to the reports, the website is no longer available on any platform.
According to a report dated June 10, 2026, by the US Embassy, Under President Trump, the USA is trying to end illegal Birth Tourism schemes.
The report also found a major Birth tourism scheme in West Africa. People were using fraudulent documents and visa fixers to get themselves a tourist visa and deliver their baby in the US to obtain citizenship for the child.
In Europe, in 2024, a US Embassy found out about 400 suspected cases of Birth tourism; after inspection, they traced 6 companies that helped people with visa interview training, housing arrangements, and delivery planning.
The companies were shut down, and the visas of foreign nationals were revoked after the investigation.
The US State Department said, “U.S. visas are a privilege, not a guarantee.”
The State Department is launching global operations to eliminate birth tourism, stop system abuse, and penalize those committing fraud.
In 2026, the House Oversight Committee sent letters to US entities and institutions that were engaged with the Birth Tourism scheme or visa providers for foreign nationals.
Dr. Steven Camarota of the Centre for Immigration Studies mentioned that an estimated 26,000 babies are born in the US to foreign national mothers every year, and according to a survey in 2023, around 70,000 people get a US visitor visa in a year.
Congressional hearing materials show that Steven Camarota identified approximately 8,700 births to foreign-born mothers with overseas addresses in 2024 birth-certificate data.
However, he said that the current data has limitations, and this metric is not a standalone measurement of birth tourism.
According to the reports, Dr. Camorata also noted that Birth Tourism is a major security concern for the US. He said, “Think about assimilation and even national security. Even the children of more run-of-the-mill illegal immigrants typically grow up in the United States, so they’re much more likely to develop some attachment to the country. But because the children of birth tourists grow up outside of the United States, they are much less likely to develop this attachment. And yes, as American citizens, of course, though, they can still enter the United States anytime they want to travel to and from the country without any prior screening.”
Brandon Gill, the Chairperson of the Task Force, said, “These firms are exploiting birthright citizenship by explicitly marketing their maternity services to foreign expectant mothers who take advantage of the U.S. immigration system to give birth in the U.S., and give their child U.S. citizenship.”
Dr. Camorata said that Birth Tourism is not against the law, and it is hard to weed out people who are involved in the scheme because thousands of people apply for visitor visas.
“You could instruct consular officers that they can ask about pregnancy. They can ask about your intent to have a child in the United States. And we could adopt a rule that you don’t get to come to the United States if you’re pregnant for a tourist visa,” he added.
